Mike's Story
I received a Bachelor's degree from the Univ of AZ & my commission as an Air Force officer in '81. I left active duty with the Air Force in '87 - the day before the 10 year reunion of the Class of '77. That brought me back home from where I was stationed in Italy. In contrast to my previous employment, I soon started to volunteer with a number of peace & social justice groups here in Tucson. This eventually led me to Central America where I worked in the fields of human rights work & electoral observation. I spent most of my Central America time out in the countryside in Nicaragua towards the end of the Contra war. I also spent a fair amount in Guatemala & a little in Honduras. of that experience I decided to become a Registered Nurse with plans to return to Central America to live & work. This took me back to the UA where I earned my RN in '96. I then went to work at the Tucson VA Hospital to fulfill a short work obligation I had incurred due to a scholarship I received. Rather than moving back down to Central America, I stayed in Tucson because I had met & married another nurse. That relationship didn't survive but I'm still at the Tucson VA Hospital. My specialty is diabetes education. I'm a volunteer with the American Diabetes Association so, if you ever participate in any ADA activities here in Tucson, ask for me & it's likely that you will find me there!
