Mike's Story
EARLY MEMORIES
Lauderdale Manors was a great place to grow up in the 60's and 70's. We had Bradley Field and the Middle River to the North to explore; to the West we had the woods along the railroad tracks before I-95 was built. To the East, along 8th Ave., before duplexes there were only pine trees and palmettos.
Lauderdale Manors playground was the scene of many pick-up football games. Does anyone remember Coach Baker? Box Hockey?
Then there was Ralph's Market on Sunrise, near Windmill Sprinklers. It was a fine place to stock up on candy, bottle rockets and smoke bombs, which we rolled down the floor of the bus the last day of school at Everglades JH.
Eventually we started riding our bikes to Birch State Park and the beach and our world began to expand.
POST HIGH SCHOOL
After high school (started at St. Thomas but graduated from Dillard), I went to a small Midwestern college on a football scholarship but came home for the Christmas holidays and never returned. After a brief stint at BCC in Davie I joined the USMC with two high school buddies (Jeff & Paul) and was soon shipped off to Parris Island, SC for basic training. Because of my love for aviation I chose as my occupational specialty aircraft maintenance and for the next four years did just that, eventually ending up with a reserve training detachment at Cecil Field, Jacksonville. I was a "plane captain" working on the A-4 Skyhawk, the aircraft John McCain piloted and was shot down in. I had the opportunity to ...Expand for more
fly "back seat" on a few occasions, and was inspired to eventually earn my private pilot's license at Pompano Airpark. Furthest I ever flew was from Ft. Lauderdale to Tallahassee.
Once out of the Marines and living in Pompano Beach, I worked in the restaurant business, in 1985 I moved to Tampa with an investment firm. In 1987 I decided to pursue my dream of working in the entertainment business and moved to Los Angeles.
I now make my home in Venice Beach. I was married for 11 years but recently separated.
I have a beautiful son who will soon be eight. He has a goofy sense of humor and will be entering second grade in September.
After several years working as an actor here in LA (You may recall my phenomenal break-out performance as the thirsty iced-tea drinker taking the "Nestea Plunge" back in 1989 :-), I switched to the other side of the camera and now work in television editing, which I love. I will start working on a new show this fall tentatively titled "Last Man Standing", on ABC. The star of the show is Tim Allen.
I always enjoy hearing from old classmates so drop me a note some time!
UPDATE: I was in Ft. Lauderdale in early June and went to Lauderdale Manors Park to check it out and snap a few pictures. The staff suspected I was a kidnapper or something and gave me a hard time even though I explained I had gone to school there and grew up in the neighborhood. They even wrote down the license plate # of my rental car! Sad that things have reached this point.
