Mike's Story

Life I am at mhodge dot ufl dot edu. I am originally from Richmond, VA, but graduated from high school in Naperville, IL. For college, I first completed my AA while serving in the US Army, and then went to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) and completed my BS in industrial technology (May 1995), only to get involved in real estate, in which I worked as a Realtor as well as invested in rental homes and duplexes. This was something that worked out well financially, but was not very intellectually satisfying. I had been tutoring math to a few friends, and thought it would be nice if I could teach math at the college level. So I returned to SIUC (June 1997) and pursued an MS in math while teaching as a TA and eventually sold my rental properties. I took a year off during the program to pursue other business opportunities, but finally graduated with my MS in June 2000. I was on a roll so much with school at this point that I decided to keep going and realized I had a particular interest in applications of math and statistics in business. I moved to Gainesville, Florida in July 2000 to pursue a PhD in operations management (a branch of Decision and Information Sciences) in the Warrington College of Business at the University of Florida (UF). At the same time, I started teaching math and statistics at Santa Fe Community College (SFCC). I also worked as a TA for the College of Business at UF (8/00 to 8/01), and later as an instructor for the math department at UF. I plan to teach statistics at UF in the near future -- probably next summer (2006) when I am off f...Expand for more
rom my full-time job at SFCC. At this point, I noticed the private tutoring I had been doing for a few years was becoming more and more enjoyable and business began to pick up as students got to know me and refer their friends. At the request of several students I was tutoring, I started doing group tutoring sessions in Spring 2002. At this point, I realized I found quite a good balance of doing what I like to do best. Since I have realized I have more than enough educational background to do what I want to do for a career, I left the PhD program at UF, but might just finish those last couple classes I need for my MBA one of these days so I can have a degree from a top tier university (sorry, SIUC, but I didn't go there for the quality of education, and anyone who lives in IL or nearby knows what I mean). However, life can’t be all just work and I certainly like to have fun as well. I became certified in SCUBA diving but like swimming without equipment much better, since it's a little more of a challenge, and SCUBA gear can be a hassle to deal with. My favorite place to swim is Ichetucknee Springs, which most people will only attempt to go down in a tube or canoe (nobody has been killed or bitten by the alligators there, contrary to popular rumor -- just watch out for the poisonous snakes!). I also enjoy working out at the gym, which do about 5-6 times a week and feel great afterwards. I have a few favorite night spots as well such as clubs and restaurants, although I appreciate some quiet time when I can get it. The picture is with my Son, Scott, at Tampa Bay.
