Mike's Story
Born in L.A. to phenomenally caring gifted parents, father Vadim was proficient in 85 languages & dialects (US Intel called Dad the Human Encyclopedia), mother Marie was a much-beloved inner-city Home Econ teacher for 39 years (all students protected Mom during Watts Riots). Have a world-class brother Greg, also a Marshall High grad ('71). Taught myself to read at age 2, libraries were my playground, until an elementary school teacher saw me reading Heinlein and overreacted. Became even more withdrawn, sensitive, anti-authority, only extreme curiosity got me out of my shell, plus amazingly tolerant friends and surreal weirdness at Marshall High. JFK, MLK and other deaths hit hard, I spent the 1960s obsessively chalk-drawing happy faces everywhere, neighborhood, campus, SF peace marches, then trekking across the USA to Expo'67, then all over Europe and Scandinavia. 6 times until deathwishes were out of my system. Became a math-language major at UCLA, until our father died from smoking, reality reeled and I escaped college with a hybrid degree in Film & TV Production & Direction. Became known for hyperkinetic animation, until severe work stress caused crippling osteoarthritis, but cured myself to walk & run again, which led to co-starring on a Disney TV special as a 500mph wizard. Then produced, wrote, directed, edited, special-effected "The Wizard of Speed & Time" 35mm feature film (now on Youtube for free); acted as the ghosts in Paramount's "Ghost" (really, check IMDb). Won awards, regrew my hair, finally started dating, loving, living. Until reality collapsed, our mother suffered a paralyzing stroke, and I became 24/7 caregiver, helping her survive 14 years of medical bureaucrazy to her final sleep.
