Mike's Story
Life
I finally decided to join the Navy after all, but enlisted instead of going as an officer. After a fast 6 yrs and lots of 'Navy Adventure' and college, I left and worked for an aerospace firm in So. Cal. that subcontracted for part of the 'Star Wars' projects, then went to work for a school district in San Dimas. After building their computer center and running it for 12 years, my wife & I decided we needed more humidity and a smaller population. We left for Florida and brought our horses and computers with us. I'm still dabbling in computers and stocks while she's training & breeding Welsh Cobs (medium sized horses/ponies). I'm getting to the point of thinking about getting a real job again, but I keep putting it off. Soon, maybe...
(2003 update - OK, I did it. I've actually returned to a real job, what a bother - now I've got to listen to that stupid alarm clock...) I'm working with a pretty nice company that makes devices for MRI machines. It was called MRI Devices (original, isn't it?) then was purchased by Intermagnetics General, which has been, in turn, purchased by Royal Philips Electronics - so now I'm working for Philips. Though I never did get to take drafting/design, I'm now in the enineering/design department and use CAD tools to make engineering drawings for some of the coolest stuff next to the Star Trek tri-corders. If you've ever had an MRI taken, there's a good chance something from here helped to speed up the experience and make the pictures turn out lots better. No X-rays, no cutting you open to see what's inside. Now, if we could just get that portable machine working ;-)...Expand for more
My wife is still training/raising the Welsh Cobs an has returned to breeding half-Welsh/half-Arabian's. We're also still in Florida, but will most likely soon be moving to Tennessee.
Never had any kids, so it was easy to be portable for a long time. Now the horses keep us anchored a good bit. We've taken a couple of them to national championships and now we have one in particular that was used as a model for Breyer toy horses. I guess that's pretty exciting...
Still can't quite believe what happened to the US on 9/11. I guess we saw it coming but couldn't believe anybody would actually do something like that. Our eyes are open now, and I hope we make it right. Sometimes freedom can be expensive, but cowering in a corner is more so. I hope you're all doing well. Drop a note if you feel like it, it'd be fun to see how we've turned out.
(2017 update)
The past 14 years have been something else. My wife, Lynda, died in 2011 after struggling with cancer for two years. It wasn't truly terrible until the last two months, and we were able to spend nearly all that two years together. The people I worked with were amazing. I was able to take my job home and do what work I could from there. I miss them now, because -
in July 2015, I decided to leave my job and take care of my Mom and Dad up in the Panama City area near the Florida panhandle. Then last year my Dad had a stroke and he's fighting to get back the use of his right side. So far it's been rough on him, but he's getting some pretty good care at a Veteran's Nursing Home with amazing physical therapy folks.
Everything is ... I guess it just is.
