Milan's Story
Life
I have been busy the past few decades I assume like most of us tend to be working and or raising a family and for the most part enjoying life.
Professionally I have been employed primarily in the environmental consulting industry with a stint in Mergers and Acquisitions for a large solid waste company. For a few years I was also a lobbyist and worked on various legislative programs involving the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and related state and federal programs.
My work experience during the mid 1980's and early 1990's led to me stumbling into other related fields which has been successful for me during the past 20 years.
For the past 10 years I have owned a small environmental engineering company that has had the good fortune to be involved in many unique and stimulating assignments in North America, South America, the UK, Europe and Antarctica. I have worked on projects in over 25 states (Including Alaska and Hawaii) as well as projects in Canada.
Currently I am working on several innovative renewable energy projects as well as traditional environmental assignments as the opportunities arise.
In 2003 I travelled and worked on projects in Antarctica (and 2004) and this work was extremely rewarding. I was on an expedition with Robert Swan and with other team members from 17 countries. We spent almost a month on the ocean on a research ship and travelled to numerous research bases around the Antarctic Peninsula. A bit of modern history, Robert Swan was the first person (since Robert Scott of England, the second person to the South Pole) to walk to the South Pol...Expand for more
e and survive (Scott did not make it back). Swan was old school he used a compass and he and another companion pulling sledges or sleds walked over 900 miles...no GPS...during the mid 1980's. Rob Swan went on after this feat to be the first explorer to walk to both the south and north poles. He has a very good story to tell and has become a great friend too.
Back in North America I sit on the board of directors of a not-for-profit organization called the Delta Institute. I have had the honor to work with very dedicated staff on projects within the Great Lakes Region that Delta has promoted which has made life and the environment better while innovating which is usually not the role of a not-for-profit organization. This too is very rewarding. Together with other Delta board members and staff we have been innovating in Illinois and Michigan assisting with unique pollution prevention and energy efficiency programs as well as carbon trading in association with the Chicago Climate Exchange.
I have a 20 year old daughter, a 16 year old son as well as a 7 year old daughter.
I love what I do but my work does not define me, it is the results of my work and the ability to give back something meaningful which is an important aspect of why I do what I do and life is generally good and I have been lucky. Being relatively successful was a bonus.
There is not much more to say and hope to hear from some old friends. I admit I have not kept up with our class as much as my older siblings but now I am attempting to re-connect somewhat and this seemed like a good vehicle.
