Mildred's Story
Life
You may know me better as Gloria. No one ever dared called me Mildred. That was my Grandmother's name and I always thought it too old. Although it may be catching up to me now.
I moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1985. Graduated from Indiana State Univ., Terre Haute in 1973. I have been working for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida since 1989. Currently my position is Sr. Audit Coordinator in the Healthcare Audit Department. Never married, no children. I four cats. I moved in with my mother after my father passed away in 1995 and now reside in Orange Park, Florida, just outside Jacksonville. I am, and have been, an active technical volunteer at Theatre Jacksonville, a local Community Playgiyse, since 1985. At TJ I perform many duties, from stage management, not my favorite, set construction and lighting and sound operator. I have also been on the Repertoire Committee for many years. The Rep. Committe selects the plays for the coming season. I am very proud to be associated with this Theatre. TJ is one of the oldest continuously producing Theatre's in the United States. We are currently in our 90th season. No, not me, the Theatre. Ms. K, you got me hooked. I don't get paid, but I love it.
I also love may computers and have both a laptop and desktop. I've become addicted to video games. I know, at my age!!?? My Playstation3 is a wonderful thing. Driving and Flying games are my favorites. You ought to try them. Yep, I guess I'll never grow up.
It's hard to believe that High School was over 30 years ago. My fondest memories were of Ms. K. and the Drama department. I remember working on plays like, Mrs. McThing, A Man for All Seasons, Carousel and Carnival. Oh yes, and Lil Abner. That was the only play that I actually got a part in. I was only in the chorus, but that was fine with me.
I'm glad I found Classmates.com. Seeing the names of my former classmates brings back so many memories.
School
Ok, how do I begin? I guess you can say I started school at Kindergarten. I attended a Catholic kindergarten; I can't think of the name now (it'll come to me), Saint something. I attended Corpus Christi for a short time and then I went to Perry Heights grade school. At that time it was a K thru 8. Somewhere along the line it changed to a K - 6. So, when I moved up to 7th grade I ha...Expand for more
d to go to Tekoppel. Since it was around 10 blocks from where I lived, I had to walk to school. At Perry Heights we took the bus. At both schools I was in the orchestra. I played the violin, very badly. But my parents were proud of me, and that's what mattered. Then in 1965 I went on to Reitz. That was scary. I was never a great student, average I guess. I do remember how cliquish high school was. The one place all that seemed to melt away was when I got involved in drama class and worked on the plays. Everyone seemed to work together. I guess because we had a common cause. Those are the times I remember most fondly. After graduating in 1969 I went on to Indiana State. I would like to have attended Indiana University, like my brother, but unfortunately my grades weren't good enough. When I enrolled I was intending to become a Physical Therapist, but I just couldnÂt grasp some of the courses. Chemistry was killing me. Rather than flunk out, I changed majors to Speech/Drama. That would be the equivalent of a Communications degree now. My parents had paid for the first year of college for me, but when it came time to go back, my mother decided I should stay here and go to school. So, I attended the local ISU Campus, went to work and saved my money. I was able to save enough to allow me to go back to Terre Haute for my Junior year. I worked at Kent Plastics and was able to get that job back the following summer for my Senior year. There is no way I could do that now. The tuition is just too much. I graduated during the summer of 1973. I didnÂt attend the ceremony. That's something I'll always regret.
After I graduated from Indiana State, I took classes at Ivy Tech in computer programming and repair getting both an Occupational and Technical degree there. It didn't do me much good, but I can at least say I have them. Down here in Florida I've taken classes at Florida Community College Jacksonville in photography and computer programming.
I used to play the guitar. Mostly during my college years. I own both a Classical and Acoustic guitar. It was just for fun. I was never really that great at it, but good enough to sing by. I keep thinking I'll take that up again. Now I've bought myself an electric piano. I've always wanted to learn to play. One of these days I'll learn.
