Mimi's Story
Life
I am recently engaged to my long time boyfriend. We have four cat's and live in North Hollywood.
I currently work for the City of Los Angeles as a Youth Development Specialist. I work with teens involved in gangs and drugs living in the housing projects of East Los Angeles.
I have also been involved in Los Angeles politics and have ran the field for political candidates. Most recently I worked on the campaign to re-elect former Mayor Jim Hahn.
I am also an appointed City Official. In 2002 I was appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn to serve as a City Commissioner for the Housing Dept.
As commissioner I shape policy in Los Angeles as it relates to rent control areas. I also preside over cases and render decisions concerning rent control/housing issues.
In my early to late twenties I made my living as a labor organizer representing and fighting for better working conditions for low to moderate paid workers in the private sector.
Other then some courses at a few community colleges in Los Angeles I did not obtain a college degree. I attended the University of life experiences. To date I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to have worked in fields that I have been very passionate about.
Workplace
After High School I spent time as a switch board operator in a private hospital. It was there that I got my first taste of organized labor. I became a union steward. Representing over 400 healthcare workers in work related grievances. The union eventually hired me as a full time union organizer.
I evolved into organizing political campaignes in Los Angeles for a variety...Expand for more
of political canidates. I was also very involved in the re-election campaign for former Mayor Jim Hahn.
One of my most rewarding work experiences has been when I spent six years working at the Community Development Department of the City of Los Angeles with at risk youth in the projects of East L.A. My job was taking those kids with huge life obstacles and making sure they graduated from high school. The graduation rate in East L.A. is less then 50%. You could imagine how proud I was of the kids on my case load that I spent four years with everday the day they graduated. They overcame prenancy, poverty, unstable living situations, parents that used drugs and had HIV.
Through it all
they stayed in school. Mind you not always the same school they started out in, but the out come was their diploma. I am so proud to say some of them have surpassed my educational level and are in Universitys and on there way to a BA.
This has been my most rewarding job to date.
I love helping people and as a City Housing Commissioner I had the opportunity to help low income families living in horrible rental units and putting financial sanctions on slum lords.
Currently, I once again am working for labor. I work for a Union that represents city workers. I am the first woman in Los Angeles to represnt Sanitation workers of the City of Los Angeles. I represent the trash truck drivers as well as the sewer workers. I can proudly be referred to as the Queen of Trash or the Queen of Sewers. This really is a great job too. I'v had the good fortune of always doing something I love and feel passionate about.
