Mindy's Story
Looking back, I feel like I was sort of invisible in high school, so I don't know if many people will remember me.
I was in school forever, so I had my kids late; John is 22, Deanna is 20, and Libby, the "baby", is 18.One just graduated from college, 2 more to go! Unlike my kids' experience, I don't recall high school being full of daily drama; I remember music (band with Mike Campbell, choir (I can't remember his name! I've probably repressed it because he was always giving me such a hard time!) and of course, I remember Sing Out West Morris. High school wasn't difficult academically and complicated socially like it seems to be now. I remember a few great teachers, and a few bad guidance counselors - I still can't believe I was once told I should go to secretarial school! Maybe that was a sign of the times, female = secretary.
After West Morris Mendham High, I pretty much spent the rest of my life in academia - I guess I was destined to always be a nerd! (Fortunately, the "real world" appreciates nerds a lot more that HS did.) College - Franklin and Marshall. Grad school - NYU. Postdoc fellowship - Yale Medical school. Faculty positions - Barnard, NYU, Yale, Quinnipiac, and now tenured Associate pro...Expand for more

Peter Miserendino and I were married for 27 years, but I am now recently divorced and trying to figure out what a social life looks like at this age. I live on a couple of acres in a beautiful semi-rural area in CT; unfortunately the trade off for country living is a long commute to work! Although my teaching, writing, and research keeps me busy at least 50 hrs a week, when I do have time I still love to play music, sing in a local chorale, make quilts, bake, garden, and get involved in various church and community service groups.
I'm surprised as I read other profiles of people my age who are already retired or about to be; retirement isn't even on the radar for me! I love my job, and that I can make a difference in young people's lives. Fortunately, there's no mandatory retirement age in academia, so I hope to be able to continue doing what I'm doing for many more years.
I would love to hear from old high school friends, especially those from Sing Out - it was a very important and influential part of my life. I remember Mendham fondly, and it would be fun to reminisce with old friends who share that history.
