Miriam's Story
Those who knew me "then" would not be surprised. Personality doesn't really change that much; and mine is no exception. I'm still a mostly liberal iconoclast--still questioning the rules and mostly playing by my own whenever I can get away with it. (Ofcourse as a public school teacher, that can get tricky; and I have navigated some treacherous waters.)
Though I went to graduate school to become an Urban Planner, I'm now a seventh grade language arts teacher, married to a lawyer. I didn't love urban planning as I went into it with an idea of making a difference. Mostly, I pushed paper and watched time pass. But, as a teacher, I feel that I do make a difference and I like what I do.

es where I don't think of my own sophomore and senior English Teacher, Mrs. Bonita Rettman. She remains a strong role model and one of my personal heroines. Nowadays she especially comes to mind as I lovingly wield my red pen on my own students' papers. Though I have taken many credits in language arts education and hold a leadership postion with the National Writing Project at Rutgers University, I still believe that she taught me most of what I know. Did I ever thank her? I doubt it. But, as I reflect, I really wish that I had! I also think of her as I compose politically correct responses via e-mail to my students' parents. Oh! How times have changed. The things she used to get away with--now, she would hang!
