Mitchel's Story
Life
I retired from the military in 1998 after 29 years of military service and my wife, Irma Elizabeth and I, settled outside of Colorado Springs, CO in a town called Calhan. We have two children, Toni Lynn and Thomas Jerrold, and seven grandchildren: Natausha, Vivian, Ayanna, Ivory, Mark, Caitlyn and Colton. My daughter retired from the Air Force 2013 and my son is still on active duty in the Air Force stationed at Minot AFB, ND. He is a maintainer on the B-52s. I had two tours to Vietnam (Apr69-Apr70 & Feb71-Jan72); also stationed in Hawaii, Greece, Sicily, Germany, Arizona, Michigan, Maine, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Colorado two times, and Georgia. I also had temporary duty assignments to Wake Island, Australia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Italy. On 15 April 2010 I retired from Federal Civil Service. At the time I retired I was working for the Air Force in a civilian capacity as an IT Project Manager at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. We have two dogs, a Siberian Husky by the name of Max and an Alaskan Klee Kai with the name of Coalton, and two horses, Tyler and Spyder. I belong to the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. I'm the Chaplain for Colorado 3-2 and my road name is Rabbi. I ride a 2013 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Tri-Glide
Military
I had a variety of different specialties and assignments while in the military. Most of my time was in the Air Force and I was a comm center technician, security policeman, ground radio operator, and an IT project manager. I did spend a few years with the Army in a field artillery battalion and in a military police company.
I had two tours to Vietnam. On my first tour I was assigned primary duties in a comm center but was also part of the air base ground defense team. 20 hour days were quite common. On my second tour to 'Nam I worked in a comm maintenance control center but was also part of a team that provided security to Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) doctors. We would go to areas that were still not under full control of the South Vietnamese government and provide medical services to the villager...Expand for more
s. Most of the time we were successful in our actions. However, one village that did accept our medical aid was overrun by the communists after we had departed. Our two Army advisers were killed along with 29 men, women, and children. The communist forces also kidnapped 19 men and pressed them into service. Too bad that the newspapers never reported the atrocities that the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong committed.
I left active duty after eight years and joined the National Guard. My civilian jobs included being a fast food restaurant manager (terrible job) and law enforcement and emergency medical services. I rejoined the active military after being in the guard for 6 years.
I had numerous assignments after returning to active duty. The best one I had was in Germany. We spent four years there and did a lot of traveling throughout the country. We all learned to ski while there. I was also a coach on the Ramstein High School Varsity Football Team where I was coach of the kicking team. We had a terrific staff of coaches and players. During the 3 years I was on the coaching staff we had a record of 26 wins and 0 losses. My wife and I also had the opportunity to go to Paris for a few days.
I retired in July 1998 after 29 years, 10 months, and 18 days of total military service. Looking back on my military career I can honestly say that I do not regret one moment of it.
Here are some of the more important awards and decorations I received while in the military:
