Mitchell's Story
Life
After PVHS, I eventually ended up in Washington DC and worked for 7 years at the NIH in neurosurgical research. I was a CO and did not participate in VN,rather worked for the Public Health Service. Married, divorced, lots of traveling, worked as a photographer in Europe and North Africa,a black coral diver in Hawaii, lived in Mexico for several years, and went to med school in Chicago. I was a surgical resident at UCLA, and then changed to anesthesia and critical care. Married again, worked in S. Cal for a few years, then moved to Modesto. Two boys now (7/2010) 21 and 27, step daughter 38, 2 granddaughters 16 and 3. Divorced, moved to Maui, worked as an anesthesiologist, then gave it all up to dive for a year in Hawaii and the South Pacific. I planed on traveling to all those places I have always wanted to see and photograph.I still dive as often as I can, write, explore with a camera, and enjoy sharing adventures with the boys.
In March, 2001 received an offer I couldn't refuse, and am now the Medical Director of Anesthesia Services and Pain Management at a Regional Medical Center in Arizona. Both boys initially were with me and we lived in the White Mountains at 7100 feet, and were about 20 minutes from a great little ski resort. Zach the youngest now (7/10) lives in Portland and is in college and playing in a band. Alex is in the Coast Guard as a Rescue Swimmer in Kodiak Alaska and jumps out of helos. My b...Expand for more
oat and diving gear are still in Lahaina, Maui. We visit often. I am very happily married to Bonney, and now have two more step children, Jody 24 and Justin 27 and a granddaughter 3. Alexis lives with us most of the time. Bonney and I work together 24/7, travel as much as possible, and are the best of friends. AT LAST!!
Workplace
Still working as an anesthesiologist/pain management physician and as medical director. Bonney and I get back to Hawaii as often as possible so I can dive for black coral, and take pictures. It pays for the trip, the boat and diving expenses, but mostly satiates my passion for the outdoors, photography, and rejuvenates and re-energizes my wanderlust soul, at least for a few months.
Update June 2011
Justin, our son died Feb 2011 from complications of diabetes. He was 27. Alex is now in Miami, in the Coast Guard in school to become a physicians assistant. Jody and Alexis (4) with us in the White Mountains. Zach in Portland still in school and making music.
I am full time pain management and neuromodulation surgeon, Bonney is at home recovering from bilateral mastectomies and chemo. I had a minor surgery that was complicated by gangrene with septic shock, 5 more ops, still a bit crippled. On a mental health break to Hawaii, Bonney and I were caught in the Japan tsunami as it hit Lahaina Harbor. Boat listed 60 degrees, Bonney was tossed about, breaking 3 ribs. Tough year.
