Mona's Story

Life My Kids I have 3 great kids. 2 sons 20 & 19. Then we have a little girl, who is 7 years old. Being a parent is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. My Job Nurse manager, busy unit busy hospital update: August 28th, found out I had colon cancer, right after the class reunion. Telling everyone....get a colonoscopy! Even if you don't have family history as I didn't. I had no symptoms either except for anemia. I felt lousy, why I kept following thru with my doc, even then they removed a softball sized tumor from my upper colon. I also had 5 lymph nodes involved, so I just ended my 6 months of chemo. I'm feeling better, but not even close to 100%. All of you who know me know I haven't been sick a day in my life, so guys please take care of yourselves. It shakes up your life so much and scares the hell out of everyone around you including yourself. Please keep me in your prayers........ May,25th 2004 I have learned that I am completely free of cancer! Feeling back to normal, doing everything just as before. I've been very lucky, and hope it continues.... March 19th 2005: Still cancer free! Just saw my Doc for a checkup, says it's my attitude keeping me going. Hope the good news continues! July 2005 Still cancer free.......Doc won't let me go for more than 4 months without a checkup, wondering what his problem is. LOL. Thrilled, life has been good. Listen, as we're fast approaching 50, you should get a colonoscopy. It's easy, they give you Versed you pass out for awhile and it's done. The worst ...Expand for more
thing is the night before when you have to drink the prep. But hey, 12 of my friends took my advice, and 3 of them had polyps removed. Who knows......Do yourself a favor, and don't think it couldn't happen to you. We're passed that age.... Jan. 21,2007 Still cancer free, as far as I know. I'm going to the doc in the a.m. Feeling good, great in fact. Moved this past summer, bought a great house in Orland Park, IL. Kids are doing good too. Sons are 20, 19. Daughter is 7 now. I'm looking forward to the 30th class reunion, hopefully everyone will show! June 2007 Still cancer free, go back to the Dr. next month. Feeling great, no problems. 2 kids in college......how'd that happen? One in 1st grade.......how'd that happen?? Life is good, no complaints.......... March 2008 Still cancer free.....one more checkup to go, then it's considered a cure! Wish me luck. Bigger update... getting divorced! After 22 years? Yes, it's true. Long story, but I'm happy in fact happier than I've been in say... 22 years! Just kidding, people change and life goes on. I'll get thru this too! August 2008 I wish I could have come to the reunion, saw the pictures. Hey...when did we turn into our teachers??Just kidding... Divorce is final, happy as a clam now. Still cancer free! I'm considered a cure now. I feel truly blessed. February 2009 Changed careers, no more ICU nursing, now doing research for a big cardiology practice. Love it. I'm having a ball in my personal life, can't believe how much my life has changed for the better.
