Monica's Story
My life since high school has been interesting, unexpected, and tragic in some ways. I went to University of Central Florida right out of high school with my identical twin sister, Brenda. We graduated from there in December of 1992 with Bachelor's Degrees in Psychology. In my sophomore year of college I had a beautiful daughter, Courtney, who was born with Down Syndrome. itrus County. On March 11, 2000, Courtney died at All Children's Hospital in St. Pete from an infection. She was only 8 years old. For me, life effectively ended on the day she died. Since then I've had to rebuild my life--even when I didn't want to go on. Now, I work as a Family and Consumer Sciences Agent for the UF/IFAS Citrus County Extension office and I love teaching people how to improve their lives by giving them research-based information so that they can make better choices in life. I just got remarried to a wonderful man who is supportive of my dreams and loves me for who I am (despite all my flaws). I feel very blessed to have had Courtney in my life--even though it was way too short--because she has made me who I am today. I will always miss her until I can see her again.
