Monica's Story

Hello Friends & Classmates!! Here's what I've been up to these last 20+ years.... The very day after graduating from UHS, I moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL! I wasn't sure what I really wanted to do in life, so after a month of relaxing in the sun, I decided that the most honorable thing I could do would be to serve my country!! So, I joined the United States Air Force and was ready for anything! A month later, I found myself going through Basic Training in Texas-IN AUGUST!!! It was not quite my idea of "fun" but I learned some great folding techniques and cleaning skills which I still use today! I then attended my Technical Training in Illinois,(in the dead of Winter!!) to learn about my chosen career field "Aircrew Life Support." While there, and at the pleading of my best friend from Basic, I got my first (and only) tatoo, on my ankle, which I STILL hide from my father to this day!! After my training, I was finally assigned to my first duty station in Germany! (My first choice on my "dream sheet!") I worked in a Fighter Squadron and assisted F-4 and F-16 Fighter Pilots in all of their life supporting needs....(Inspection and Instruction on proper use of their Flight gear, various survival training, Search and Rescue, Escape and Evasion tactics, Bail-out/ejection procedures, etc. (Anything to keep them alive!) While there, I met my husband, also serving his country in the USAF. After a brief getting-to-know-each-other stage, we took the train to Denmark and got married!! (European version of Vegas!) After our time was up in Germany, we were both transferred to Utah! Went from being surrounded by Beer and Wine festivals on a daily basis to a DRY state! (And I'm not referring to the climate- although it was dry as well!!) Perfect time to start a family!! We had two children while living there. After my 4 year te...Expand for more
rm was up, I decided to get out of the military. I took a job with the State of Utah, Public Safety Dept. as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher/-911 operator. My husband eventually got orders to the Republic of Turkey! After a 2 year adventure there- full of some amazing travels, we eventually re-located back to Germany (a different area than we had been before.) We spent 3 years there, before returning back to the States. My husband finished his 20 year career in the Air Force by taking a Recruiting Assignment to Virginia. That is what brought us to our current home in Beautiful Bedford County. We live very close to Smith Mountain Lake and could not be happier! Our daughter is in college now, and our son is in high school. We have 2 chocolate labs-(plus 5 puppies!) Four of the pups will be in new homes soon. We will be KEEPING one for ourselves!! So make that 3 dogs, a cat and a snake-(belongs to our son!) When we first moved to Virginia, I worked as a Police/Fire and Rescue Dispatcher/-911 Operator for a short time, then got into the Nuclear Security field, where I became a Certified Law Enforcement Officer. After 5 years of working on a Tactical Response Team at a Nuclear Facility, I moved from the Private sector into public service. I started out as a Patrol Officer in a town close to Roanoke City. I have since been transferred to the Investigations Division. I'm not sure what the future holds for me, but will continue to go with the flow!! My husband and I have been married for 21 exciting years. We continue to look for new opportunities to keep our life interesting! This is my "story" up until now! I hope I can update this in a few years with something significant to share!! May you live each day to the fullest! And remember....Kindess is contagious-spread it around!! God bless you always!
