Monique Pittman-Lui:

CLASS OF 1974
Detroit, MI

Monique's Story

I am a graduate of Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and am a Registered Nurse with experience in Med Surg, Telemetry, CCU, and Adolescent Psychiatry. Found nursing did not speak to my heart, went back and recieved my undergraduate degree in English Literature and Playwriting from Wayne State University. Studied intensively with Esther Broner. Have had several plays performed including "You Never Miss the Water" and "Coffee Cups." Married a wonderful man from Uganda, in East Africa, Nason Lui, in 1979, moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1983 where I currently reside. We have three children. Two girls and a boy, ages 22,19, and 15. Started a production company called Spirit Productions with which I do all manner of arts production which allows me to pick and choose my projects and still pay maximum attention to my family. I also work with my husband where I am the Business Manager. I have admininstered a grant for the National Humanities Council called Kansas Dance on Tour that brought Garth Fagan Dance to Kansas for a two week five city residency that included master classes, performances, seminars, and a book that was then presented to Congress. One of the highlights of my life has been as Volunteer Coordinator for the Kansas International Museum where I designed, recruited, and implemented a 9 month volunteer program for an international art exhibit from Russia called "The Treasures of the Czars" about the Romanov Dynasty. These artifacts had never been out of the Armory Museum in the Kremlin and were seen only in St. Petersburg, Florida and in Topeka, Kansas. I managed 2000 volunteers/week for that exhibit which drew over a quarter of a million visitors from all o...Expand for more
ver the world. I was named Kansan of the Year for that endeavor and also got a chance to travel to Moscow, Russia. Other highlights include being Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the Topeka Performing Arts Center, as well as designing their first Volunteer Program during the inaugural season that included Ben Vereen, Jay Leno, and Dionne Warwick. I have also been President of the Helen Hocker Performing Arts Center and have had stints as a tv producer which I really enjoyed. I have just retired after four years as Chair of the Education Committee at Lake Forest Academy in Chicago, Illinois, but am still a member of their Board of Trustees. I am also a member of the Visiting Teams that do accreditation for the Independent Schools Association of the Central States. How do I hope old friends remember me? It really does not matter to me since those days are gone but I surmise how I was percieved is different than I remember things, but that is OK. We were young and trying to determine who we were and where we were going. A lot of self-discovery, and some were farther along in that process than others. Many had help from great adults in the process, while others had no one to help, or had adult kooks at home. The adults in my life did the best they could and I am especially grateful. From 1970-74 there were also a lot of classist and racial issues being played out at Immaculata. So I remember good times and bad times. But I made some wonderful friends, and today I wish everyone good health, the fulfillment of dreams, the love of family in whatever way you define family, and a comfortable sanctuary in which to lay your head. Hugs and Kisses to All, Monique
