Monique's Story

Life 1966 - graduation and work (which I regret, I should have taken the summer off and enjoyed being 17. 1967 - was engaged and married that September. Biggest mistake of my entire life. At that time, though, weddings were like a competiton to see who had the best gown, the biggest bridal party ... it wasn't about love, commitment, etc. 1968 - moved to Maine and have stayed here ever since. 1969 - separation and divorce proceedings. 1970 and on - a blur of youthful mistakes that altered my life. A 2nd marriage that was just as damaging psychologically but produced two sons - Jay who is now 32 and Heath who is 30. We divorced about 3 years into the marriage. Then a period of staying single for 10 years, where I "found myself" as the saying goes. I managed to work, take care of 2 children (one who is challenged), and owning my own home, with a decent car in the driveway to boot. In the late '80s I met David Wormwood, and we have been married 19 years this past June. I got my dream man, my dream house and life's challenges are easier met with someone by my side, but I know I can always do it alone which keeps me solid and grounded. I dislike women who collapse if they do not have a significant other by their side. On family ... my Dad died14 years ago on May 15th and that is still something I have had difficulty accepting. He was my pal and confidant and Dad all wrapped into one package. Such a wonderful man. I miss him terribly. Mom is doing well, travelling all over the world. She recently sold her place in Florida, but I have a feeling that her "wander-lust" will keep her on the road going somewhere. She is going to Spain soon; that's after having been to Australia and New Zealand just a few months ago. The woman is amazing. She rode on the back of my husband's motorcycle this past summer when the family had a camp out reunion in Maine. I'm talking a 1-1/2 hour ride at the age of 79! Going on 80 Sept. 26th. She is wonderful. School I did not like high school due to the "cliques...Expand for more
" that existed. I dated boys outside of my school, mostly Concord High students because I attended dances at the "Heights" and the "Club" in Hooksett. Mom would let me go to the Heights dances because it was held in the basement of a Catholic Church. I very much wanted to be a cheerleader, didn't get there due to insecurity about my looks and weight; the guys were always teasing me about my glasses. Bookkeeping and other "office classes" were rather comfortable due to the fact that my 2nd cousin, Henriette Girard, was our teacher! Never ate hot lunch because I was too nervous to stand in line for the food what with the guys always laughing, pushing and shoving .... so I brown bagged it all four years! Unbelievable. Enjoyed going to the proms and the dates that I had with "Perch" Perreault and Michael. Had a crush on Peter King, but found that he was a "fast" guy and I was very innocent, believe it or not! Sophomore/early Junior Year, my crush was on Steve Fowler, but we never dated at all. Probably one of the only gals to graduate a virgin, tee hee. Friendships are still fresh in my mind; but I have blocked out most of the days that I spent in school as I absolutely did not like attending. Peer pressure and the complete change of attitude from Catholic School to public school rather traumatized me (not that I would want to have gone with nuns til the 12th grade). Burning of the school gym was absolutely awful as we had to have graduation outside and I had big-time allergies and was so uncomfortble through the whole ceremony. Couldn't wait for it to be over! I remember Bear Brook State Park where all the seniors "hung out" and still felt like an outcast. My high school sweetheart and I spent the time together at the park, just the two of us, while others were in groups. That's the way I was, never feeling quite close to anyone in my class but desperately wanting to be part of the class, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I now know what it means that youth is wasted on the young.
