Monita Sundell:

CLASS OF 1968
Paradise, CA

Monita's Story

I have changed quite a bit from when I was in high school. I was shy back then, but things have changed. After high school I joined the Navy and went to boot camp in Bainbridge, MD. After boot camp I stayed in Bainbridge and went to Personnelman ¿A¿ school. After ¿A¿ school I was pretty much able to pick my duty station. It is well known that you never get you first choice of duty station and sometimes not even the second. Like many military folks just out of boot camp I thought I would fool the military. I put Hawaii as my second choice and Florida as my third choice. Smarty that I was I put down Memphis, TN as my first choice. I¿m sure the folks at the base had a great chuckle as they typed my orders for Memphis. I spent 2 years in the Navy and only saw the Mississippi River. After I left the Navy I married and traveled around the US until I settled in MA in 1975. I remarried, raised two children, and worked for both the State of MASS and later the Federal Government at Westover Air Force Reserve Base. In 1986 I was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. I told the Doctor and anyone else who was nearby that I simply did not have the time for cancer. By then I was divorcing again and my youngest had just turned 7. The cancer spread to my lungs and I continued to fight the battle. I was so stressed at the time I was forgetting things and thought I might be developing Alzheimer disease. It was suggested I take a college class or two to keep my brain functioning. Not being able to do anything half way I enrol...Expand for more
led full time in the local community college. I did and even touch honors classes. I graduated with honors. It was suggested that I go on for a 4 year degree. I applied to Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA. and to Smith College in Northampton, MA. Both were close to my home. I was accepted to both and had the pleasure of turning Smith down. I love Mount Holyoke and got a fabulous education in Psychology there. By 1994 it was determined that I had beaten the odds on my cancer and that I would live. Thank goodness I did not have to waste that good education. I remarried and moved to CT. There I found work as a Recruiter at several companies. The last 10 years I have been a senior Information Technology Recruiter for several staffing and consulting companies. In 2004 I went back to college to earn a Masters Degree in Professional Counseling. I am slated to graduate in May of 2009 with a MS in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. My goal is to work with people like myself who have become disabled or out of the work force due to chronic illness. I want to help them regain their confidence and self-esteem and get back into the work force. This fall and spring I will be doing an internship at the local VA hospital in the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Division. I am looking forward to it. It feels like I have come full circle in my life. At this time I am happily married, 14 years with husband number three. My two children are successful in the personal and work lives. I am working on my third career.
