I have changed quite a bit from when I was in high school. I was shy back then, but things have changed. After high school I joined the Navy and went to boot camp in Bainbridge, MD. After boot camp I stayed in Bainbridge and went to Personnelman ¿A¿ school. After ¿A¿ school I was pretty much able to pick my duty station. It is well known that you never get you first choice of duty station and sometimes not even the second. Like many military folks just out of boot camp I thought I would fool the military. I put Hawaii as my second choice and Florida as my third choice. Smarty that I was I put down Memphis, TN as my first choice. I¿m sure the folks at the base had a great chuckle as they typed my orders for Memphis. I spent 2 years in the Navy and only saw the Mississippi River. After I left the Navy I married and traveled around the US until I settled in MA in 1975. I remarried, raised two children, and worked for both the State of MASS and later the Federal Government at Westover Air Force Reserve Base. In 1986 I was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. I told the Doctor and anyone else who was nearby that I simply did not have the time for cancer. By then I was divorcing again and my youngest had just turned 7. The cancer spread to my lungs and I continued to fight the battle. I was so stressed at the time I was forgetting things and thought I might be developing Alzheimer disease.
