Monty's Story
School
There are so many rich memories of those wonderful years at Poly. I wish I'd been more mature. I wouldn't have broken up with Marcia, and I'd have been more accepting of people whom I didn't understand. I was so envious of Spradley--his grades, his parents, that beautiful Candyapple red '57 Chevy. Today, I'd like to thank Larry's parents, and others like them, who were such great "Boosters" of the band. There were many things they did, some of which I'm not even aware, which benefitted me and others in similar circumstances without much of a family support system. "It takes a village... ." I wish I'd been able to be a better friend for Larry, but the me that was then is not the me of today.
I wish Ms. Graves, my English teacher, had lived long enough for me to thank her for fortifying me in the use of words--something I'm still developing. She was so demanding, but she made it fun, even the day she made me stand in the hall for holding hands with Marcia.
I can't thank enough my fellow members of the band, who made me feel an important part of something that grew far beyond the sum of its individual parts. Ten years ago I was able to thank Jim Smith, our director, for giving me the opportunity to excel and for helping filling those years the richest experiences of my life.
I wish Mr. Thompson were around so I could thank him too. Those words he said so often still ring in my ears, "Remember who you are and where you're from." I didn't always remember, but eventually I did.

ke a class now and then. Wish I'd majored in English and become a writer. The only class I've ever been the one always blowing the lid off the grade curve was in fresman composition.
After two years majoring in biology I switched to Accounting. (I was in zoology lab dissecting an earthworm when the teacher announced Kennedy was assinated and canceled class.) My degree is BBA, but I practically have a second degree in biology.
Never had much time for fun or money for dating because I was always working.
Enjoyed dorm life though, especially at Pachl Hall. Around 6pm every evening the same bunch of us would pile in somebody's car and drive to some restaurant. One such evening in the Spring of '64 someone said, "Let's go see Lee Harvey Oswald's grave, over at Rose Hill Cemetery!" We never found Oswald's grave because we became distracted by about five male ducks amorously engaging a female. They actually took turns, while two or three, in turn, held her down. That hussy!
It became a regular joke each evening around dinnertime. "Well, shall we go and watch the ducks F- - -?". But we never did return to Rose Hill Cemetary.
College was great.
Military
After my initial six months' training, I spent the next 5.5 years in the Marine Air Reserves, stationed at Naval Air Station, Dallas, working as an admin clerk. Was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergent (E-5). I had a revulsion to military life. It was too much like the orphanage I grew up in. Nevertheless, I did well and was offered officer training three times--declining of course.
