Myra Drickman:

CLASS OF 1958
Brooklyn, NY

Myra's Story

Went to Barnard College Class of '62. The to Grad school at Boston with an advanced degree in Physical Chemistry. That was followed by a few years working in the space program at NASA Headquarters in D.C. for a company called Bellcomm which was a subsidiary of the well known Bell Labs. It was very exciting to be part of the team that helped land men on the moon. When Bell Labs decided not to renew the contract with NASA I had a career decision to make and I decided to apply to Medical school. I was accepted by NYU two months before my 30th birthday. I spent my fourth year of med school doing electives in the Los Angeles area and I moved to Santa Monica. I did all of my post-graduate training in Los Angeles and was certified by both the American Board of Radiology [diagnostic radiology] and the American Board of Nuclear Medicine. I practiced with the City of Hope and then with a few private practices in the greater Los Angeles area until 1998 when I was diagnosed with Stage IIIB inflammatory breast cancer. This is the worst type of breast cancer as it is the most aggressive. I was fortunate that I did not have metastases at the time of diagnosis. Unfortunately for me, however, my oncologist overdosed me and improperly infused me with Taxol which was a relatively new drug in 1998. As a result I sustained severe nerve damage and became permanently disabled. The medication...Expand for more
s required to ease my pain interfered with my cognitive abilities and I did not think it was proper to continue working as a diagnostic radiologist and nuclear medicine physician. My disability insurance carriers and social security agreed and I retired on disability at the too early age of 56. I have remained cancer free for the past 11 years but have had other problems, mainly orthopedic. There have been torn rotator cuffs, knee replacements, etc. I live a relatively quiet life in Santa Monica in my condo as I am relatively limited. I am a bit nuts as I live with seven cats who enjoy the screen enclosed front patio. I enjoy time with my friends, reading, surfing the net, watching TV [and I have all the stations], eating out and doing some crafts. I used to have several theater subscriptions but my orthopedic problems often prevented my attendance and so I discontinued the subscriptions. Santa Monica is a great place in which to live. My place is about a mile from the ocean. My living-dining room faces west and I almost always have a beautiful ocean breeze. The exception is the few days a years when we have the Santa Ana winds. It never gets too hot or too cold here. The temperature usually varies between 50 and 80 degrees F. Nothing much else to say right now. I hope to hear from anyone who remembers me from the Class of 1958. I did go to our class reunion in 2008.
