Nan's Story
Hi everyone! It's been a long time, so here's the condensed version of >45 years.
I now live in Philadelphia PA. I’ve been a Union-side labor lawyer and partner in a private firm, where I've worked for 39 years. I have 2 daughters and a son - all adults now, and graduated from college (and law school or grad school). Generally speaking, work, friends, and family life are great. After several years of reducing my workload I recently became of counsel to the firm: a lawyer’s way of saying, ‘I’ll do what I want, when and for whomever I choose.” A very good thing! I worked very hard for decades in the labor movement, and made a difference. Now, with my children and grandchildren living on two coasts, I’m in a good space for (as one of the daughters calls it) “Nan-time.” Definitely looking forward to a lot less work, but many new adventures and chapters ahead.
Philadelphia basically happened by chance. I was interviewing in various eastern coast cities after finishing a clerkship Cincinnati in 1984. My law firm more or less hounded me to interview, then made me an almost instant offer. I accepted and “life happened,” as they say. My law practice has been extremely challenging and varied for 4 decades, and Philadelphia really grows on you (and quickly) with neighborhoods, history, culture —all the good stuff to keep me interested. I live in the City, but in the woods (Fairmount Park), and also at a Jersey Shore home. I still miss Michigan a bit. I drive and buy American-made. But I can't get Vernor's here, or Sander's hot fudge -- misery! I still follow the Tigers, and have my card collection of the '68 Champs, right there next to Al Kaline's rookie card, and a great photo of old Tiger Stadium at night. (My family is very kind so always amused by my idiosyncrasies, of which there are a number.) Myself, I no longer play sports, but I garden, walk or bike when I’m able. Arthritis of various kinds has caught up with me, but life is b...Expand for more
usy and active, and I will now travel more.
School
To be honest, I really disliked school before college; I was bored, restless, and couldn't wait to escape. (So many great people, but a suffocating experience otherwise.) Looking for challenge and calling, I moved to Ann Arbor in 1974, and graduated from the Residential College of the University of Michigan (1978). Then on to Northeastern University School of Law (J.D., 1981) in Boston, for its advocacy-oriented law education. I also attended Harvard University (M.S., Occupational Physiology, Safety and Health, 1982), for health-technical training that I used throughout my career, and especially during the pandemic. Prior to joining my law firm in Philly, I lived in Cincinnati for a year when I clerked on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Since joining Willig, Williams & Davidson (where I became a partner in 1989), I've worked for unions and workers of all kinds -- from fire fighters and teachers, to machinists, teamsters, communications workers, roofers and longshoremen, and so many others, across many states. Very, very few dull days in four decades, which is pretty amazing. It’s been a great run.
Work
I had a lot of jobs working my way through college and law school (from assembly lines to social research). As I said above, since 1984 I've worked in my Philadelphia law firm practicing union-side labor law. I also taught Labor Law at Drexel University School of Law, to help raise the next generation in law. (My son Ben is also a lawyer. My daughters are an MFA graphic designer, and an MBA strategic consultant.) Conversation here is always active - never a dull moment at dinner, if you can get a word in edgewise!
I hope everyone is well and living their best life. Stay safe, and enjoy it all! My best email would be nanlassen at gmail dot com, or through my law firm website (more bio info there also), which you can easily locate on the web. Take care, Nan
