Nancy McCausland:

CLASS OF 1951
Pittsburgh, PA

Nancy's Story

I have been a widow for about 22 years. I married Walter McCausland who I met when working at USSTEEL for the man who hired trainees for an accounting training program. Walt was a graduate of Lehigh University Business School and also had a Masters from there. We were married for about 25 or 30 years. We never tried not to have kids but it was not meant to be. We lived the early years in the Pittsburgh area. Then he was transferred often. We lived a varying amount of years in this area and Miami, St. Petersburg, Cherry Hill New Jersey, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Walt had been a smoker from when kids could buy cigarettes and started when he was 8 years old. He would have been 82 this year. We never had kids as I said but he did teach me how to play golf and we played in most of the cities we lived in. When we lived in Florida I learned how to clean a swimming pool since we had one. My parents and my sisters all liked him. Before I met Walt I attended Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) and I worked at U. S. Steel and then got a job at PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company). After a number years moving again, we ultimately lived back in Pittsburgh. Walt was good in his field and finally liked his job. His last job was with RCA and we eventually were back in Pittsburgh living in the North Hills. His smoking caught up with him and he died of cancer in both lungs. After I retired from PPG and we came back to Pittsburgh I worked for Allstate in an office on Babcock Boulevard. When I reached 66, I retired and by then my sister Sylvia and her husband got a divorce and she moved in with me. She also worked for a few years. We eventually decided to move to Bellevue so when we no longer wanted to drive we could walk or ride ...Expand for more
a bus free to wherever we wanted to go. She worked a year or so after we moved here. It is a duplex and she lives on the second floor and I live on the first. We can walk everywhere in Bellevue and now are both retired. I work as a volunteer at the church where we are members. We can walk to the store at the other end (Avalon end) for food. Both her daughters live in Europe (one for good in Switzerland - she married a man from there) and the other in Holland I think. She is with Greater Europe Mission and her husband is a preacher and they travel a lot in Europe. Sylvia visits them for a couple months each year. My other sister Ruth married Larry Hazeltine from Emsworth and they currently live in the Charlotte, N. C. area. They have a son who lives in the Philadelphia area and a daughter who lives in the Charlotte N. C. area. Andy (Ruth's son) has a son and daughter and Susie has a boy and a girl I. think. We have gone down a few times to visit but not recently. I walk a lot in Bellevue and am a volunteer at church. Sylvia recently retired and does some volunteer work also. There are no longer the two movie theaters in Bellevue, both are out of business. You may know that Avonworth High School was torn down and they now go to Mt. Nebo for grade and junior high school and Ohio Township for high school. It is mostly changed here and not all for the good. I walk every day and (since I never had children I do some volunteer work.) I won't mention how old we are but I still cut the grass and do the snow removal (slowly for both) to keep busy (and I am too cheap to pay someone else to do that). I can't think of anything else now. Hope everyone from out class still living are well. Nancy Davis McCausland
