Nancy's Story
Life
I made some good decisions in my life--I went to college right out of high school, though I took "the local train" because I had to work during college. When I finished my Masters in Social Work at age 29, I was living in my own apartment and loving my single life--I had many friends, travelled and was quite independent. My next best decision was marrying my husband Joe and starting our family. He is a great man and a wonderful father. Our daughter is great fun and I'm so glad I stopped to have a family. Another great decision that I've never regretted.
School
I graduated Grover Cleveland HS with alot of skills to prepare me for the business world. I've used these skills extensively though I no longer work in business. I graduated Queens College in 1975 with a BA in Psychology, and then went on to Adelphi University in Garden City, NY to get my Masters in Social Work, graduating in 1979. I have been working as a ...Expand for more
psychotherapist in Queens since that time.
College
At Queens College, I was exposed to many different students from all walks of life. I loved learning, though QC was a very competitive school at that time. I worked during college and sometimes thought I would never finish. The Psych Dept told us that we could make a career in psychotherapy without having to go through a doctoral program if we got a MSW so that was what I did. It turns out it was great advice. I have been working in this field since 1979.
Workplace
I have been working as a psychotherapist since 1979. I work with adults, children and teens. I have had a practice in Queens my whole professional career. Queens has changed a lot since when I started, but its also made my work more interesting. People sometimes dont know what to say when they meet me and find out that I am "a shrink." I try to reassure them that I'm only working when I am in the office.
