Nancy's Story

Life Nancy Engle Greathouse Hello, from Austin, Texas. If you had asked me in 1960 where I thought my life's journey would take me, the answer would have been rather simplistic, like the times we were living in. Surprisingly, my life has been anything but simplistic. The journey has taken me far from the comforts of my childhood home and has deeply enhanced my enjoyment of life through inspiring friendships. In retrospect, the challenges I experienced, both the expected and the unexpected, now seem like remarkable events to be deeply appreciated. It's amazing how they've contributed to my personal growth and provided me with an incredible sense of contentment as I continue the journey in Sun City, an active retirement community in Georgetown, Texas just 30 miles north of Austin. In the 1960's, as an Air Force wife, I experienced the extraordinary camaraderie of military families as we traveled within the United States and to foreign lands. It was the perfect opportunity for me, with my school-girl love of geography and history, to explore different communities and to converse with the residents in their own languages. That experience broadened my mind and opened my heart to long-lasting relationships with people both here and abroad. Now that I am retired, those friendships have developed into remarkable opportunities for exploring new places with very special people as my guides and translators. In the 1970's, after saying good-bye to our military life, I began a thirty-year career in the challenging and often changing field of computer technology. With degrees in Computer Science and Business Management, I handled tasks as straightforward as writing computer code and as complex as the administration of information technology resources for the state of Texas. It was a great profession for a person like me, who started out as a curious young girl embracing new challenges then ...Expand for more
developed into an ambitious woman motivated by hard-won accomplishments. Gratefully, throughout my years of retirement, as computer technology continues to evolve, so will I. Although I have occasionally thought about my classmates and the experiences we shared at Stranahan, I have never attended a high school reunion. I returned to Florida in June and July 2012 with Harry, my love and companion. We had a great visit with family and friends in northeast Florida but never made it to Ft. Lauderdale. We plan to return in the Spring, possibly taking a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale. Hope to see some classmates then. Feel free to email me. Now, that I am retired, I plan to visit every state at least once and would enjoy visiting former classmates while there. So far, I've visited 20 states (including Hawaii) so I have lots of traveling to do. If you ever come to Texas, you're welcome to stop by. My home is like a vacation cottage. The door is always open to family and friends. Military In the 1960's, as an Air Force wife, I experienced the extraordinary camaraderie of military families as we traveled within the United States and to foreign lands. First, we endured four years of long, cold winters and very short summers in Dover, Delaware. Happily, we were transferred to Oahu, Hawaii where we enjoyed two wonderful years of sunshine and beaches. Our last two years of duty were spent at Yakota Air Force Base in Japan. One day, while shopping at the BX, I ran into Luckey Dodge from our graduating class. Unfortunately, he was on his way out, so our visit was very short. Even so, I've always remembered it as a reminder of home and simpler times. Every generation of our family has served in the military and experienced the cost of a war, death or life changing experiences. We have a grandson in Afghanistan. We pray for him and the many others who are in harm's way. We pray for their families, too.
