Life
My Spouse
at college in 1968.
My Pets
Our cat is a Manx cat who wandered into our backyard in July, 2000. I have always disliked cats, so I was adamant he would not stay. But our 17-year-old son said to me, "Mom, for 17 years I've wanted a cat and you have said no. God has brought me a cat." What could I say? The cat has stayed and carries the name Chubs Lamott (Lamott for Anne Lamott, author of Traveling Mercies and Bird by Bird).
My Kids
We adopted our two sons when they were infants. Though not biologically related, they look very much alike. TJ is a senior planning to attend college this fall. Brent is in 8th grade and plays goalkeeper on a select soccer team. Unlike their parents, they both have musical talent as well and play together (guitar...Expand for more
and drums) in a worship band for the youth department at our church. TJ and I have just returned from England and France where we did some research in London, Leeds, Dover, and Calais for a young adult historical fiction novel I'm writing. They are great sons who have brought great joy to our lives.
My Job
I teach writing and children's literature at Calvin College in Grand Rapids. I also direct an annual Middle School Writers Workshop which meets at Calvin the last weekend of April. My students are primarily freshmen (for the writing courses) and juniors and seniors majoring in elementary education. I LOVE MY JOB! It is a pleasure to go to work every day. Additionally, I do try to do some writing (books and journal pieces--occasionally a sports article).
