Nancy's Story
Since college, I've been working in the journalism field. For the past 23 years, I've been at the Boston Globe. I covered the Boston Bruins from 1990-2006. During the NHL lockout in 2004-05, I spent the year doing different assignments, such as covering the Super Bowl in Jacksonville and I made trips to Switzerland to watch Joe Thornton play as well as Austria for the World Championships. For the past 3 years, I have focused on college hockey, covering BC's NCAA championship in 2008 and Boston University's in 2009. I also cover mixed-martial arts, which has been fascinating. I love having more time for other things, such as charity work, particularly with animals. On a personal note, in August of 1999, I married Jeff Burrell, a lieutenant with the Quincy (Mass.) Police Department. He's nearly a scratch golfer and plays often. I ran the Bermuda marathon in 1999 to raise money for the Leukemia Society of America and I did the Avon Breast Cancer Walk i...Expand for more
n Boston in 2007 and '08. It was a tremendous experience and an emotional one because I lost my mom to the disease in 2003. Right now, I'm training for the most challenging physical test of my life - the Keys 100 on May 15-16, 2010. The event starts in Key Largo and ends in Key West, Florida. It starts at 6 a.m. on the 15th and each competitor has until 2 p.m. on Sunday to cover the 100-mile distance. A friend of mine who lives in Islamorada threw the gauntlet down and it was impossible for me to say no. My training has just started and eventually, I will begin fundraising for a couple of local charities - the Quincy Animal Shelter and the Weymouth Food Bank. My goal by the event is to raise $10,000 to be split evenly between the two. I know these are very challenging times financially - and believe me, we at the Globe are feeling it - but with some creativity, I am confident I will reach my goals.
I would love to hear from all my old friends!
