Nancy's Story
Life
Have lived in Knoxville for over 20 years. Divorced mother of 22-year old daughter. She's a senior in a small private college in North Carolina; she's preparing for graduate school and plans to study environmental science. I am a licensed civil engineer with over 25 years experience in private practice.
Have a home in the 'burbs, but with the empty nest have been making plans to join the 'new urbanist movement' and move downtown. Will be moving to my new home in summer 2009. It's an old elementary school in downtown Knoxville which is being converted to condos.
In addition to being an old schoolhouse, it was used for interior shots of the movie, "October Sky", which was filmed in Knoxville during the late '90s. Awesome...especially for the movie buff that I am.

he classroom. Teaching engineering at the University of Tennessee and loving it! Being around college students has it challenges - they are smart as whips, but sometimes lack good old-fashioned common sense. What can I say?
Many of them have never known a world without personal computers, ATMs, the internet, riding their bicycles without wearing helmets, or playing on a community sports team where everyone did not get a trophy! They are a bit pampered and spoiled - they sometimes expect alot of things to be handed to them.
Being an instructor the age of their parents makes many of them think that I/we do not know what it is like to compete in today's world. I am constantly reminding them that I have "been there, done that, and have the tee shirt!" Lest they are too confident of the labor-saving devices they have today, I remind them that 'old school' took astronauts to the moon (and back), not to mention built the Hoover Dam and Golden Gate Bridge.
