Nancy's Story
After graduating from high school, I earned my B.S. degree in Microbiology in 1975 from Cal Poly, Pomona. I followed this by one year of training as a Medical Technologist at L.A. County, USC Medical Center. After working for a few years as a Medical Technologist, I entered graduate school and earned my Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from UCLA Medical School in 1986. Following this I took a research position as a Post-doctoral Fellow in Physical Biochemistry at Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope. In 1989 I took a faculty position in the Department of Microbiology at California State University, Los Angeles where, for the 28 years, I taught and directed my own viral pathogenesis research lab that was funded by research grants from the National Institutes of Health. and Social Sciences. After six years in that position, I recently took the position of Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs at the University. I also continue to serve as the Director of Clinical Laboratory Scientist and Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist Training Programs which I developed at Cal State LA.
Jim and I have been married for 40 years. He is a videotape editor and has worked on many shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Nanny, Eve and several others. Jim currently works for NBC where he is editing promos. Jim and I have two sons, Sean who is 29 and Scott who is 26. Sean graduated in 2011 from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania with a B.A. degree in media and communications and a minor in film studies. He works in film production as the head of lighting. Scott went to Earlham College in Indiana where he majored in history. He is still trying to figure out what career path to take.
