Nancy's Story

GLIMPSE OF MY LIFE (May 6, 2013) My childhood was magical: I remember riding my bike against the wind, playing outside for hours, getting donuts from the donut truck, chasing tumbleweeds, rolling up my skirt at the bus stop (LOL), giggling with friends (especially my BFF Carole), always having my siblings around, dance lessons at the Pink Slipper, going to speech therapy (and being teased about it by a teacher....grrr), selling girl scout cookies, Norton AFB where my father was stationed, my grandma living with us, going to movies at the Arrow Theatre, camping with family and friends, being extremely shy, going to the Fontana Days Parade, being excited about the first day of school, hanging out at the library where my mother worked, my first date, my favorite teachers, my phone number Valley 2-9809, testing TV tubes at Thrifty's and getting nickel ice cream cones, A&W root beers, phosphates at Crawford's, roller skating down my block, going to the "Square", babysitting, my homes on Chantry and Taylor Ave., space exploration, the assassinations of JFK and MLK, my dogs Corky and Muffin, cats Tom and Joe, our Studebaker and Woody, the Cold War (diving under my school desk when the siren sounded), sleepovers, going to Disneyland, my father working at FOHI after retiring from Norton (and me trying to avoid him at school LOL), the old neighborhood "gang" (good times), talking for hours on the phone, walking to Bonano's for candy, endless barefooted summers, and not liking that my parents knew most of my teachers. But, most importantly of all, I remember feeling safe. I am lucky to have grown up in Fontana. My 18th, 19th and 20s were all a blur: College at San Diego State, new friends, roommates, studying, going to concerts, learning to handle new experiences, seeing my peers get drafted (going to war and too many not coming back), working at various jobs (factory worker, pre-school teacher, food waitress, cocktail waitress, bar maid-to name a few), parties, fun, excitement, the Vietnam War ending, protests, the Kent State atrocity, watching the Watergate hearings, civil rights walks, hitchhiking places before I got my car (seemed like a good idea at the time), getting evicted....twice...SMH, my father marrying and divorcing the Wicked Witch of the West, going to Aztec and Charger games, feeling the exhilaration and heartache of falling in love, hanging out at the beach, my childhood home being sold, driving my '65 Mustang way too fast, and hoping to make the world a better place (Crazy days). Eventually moved to Sacramento and landed a job working for the State of California (worked in various fields-mostly Human Resources and Business Services). Lost my mother to cancer while in college, and will always miss her. My 30s were career oriented: Worked, worked, and then worked some more (loved my job), bought a house and settled down in Sacramento, juggled career and social life (real tough..LOL), attended to...Expand for more
ns of my friends' weddings (never mine....Sigh...), joined a Bunko group (Still in the same group), joined a gym, spent my share of time at "Happy Hour", made a lot of jaunts to Southern California to visit family and friends (and just because I missed it), traveled to Alaska, etc., welcomed a new step mother into my life (nice to see my father smile again) spent a lot of time fixing up my old house, and shopped a lot (wow, all about ME decade...LOL). During this time, joy turned to grief when my baby girl Jeannine died at birth. Some things are impossible to understand. My 40s were all parenthood: I adopted my precious baby daughter, Sofia, from Mexico. Besides dealing with the Mexican government, the INS, adoption agencies and attorneys, my life revolved around daycare, school functions, play dates, sports (soccer, softball, gymnastics, karate, swimming, rock climbing, etc.), Disneyland, kissing owwies, hugs, trips to the zoo, birthday parties, the laughter of kids, time outs, bedtime stories, and all the fun as well as the challenges involved with being a single working parent. She was, and still is, the light of my life. Also was saddened during this time at the loss of another beautiful lady to that dreadful disease cancer....my step mother Betsy. My 50s were enchanting: After kissing my share of frogs, I met the prince of my dreams-Ron (still is), got to travel some (went to Europe, explored USA, etc.), embraced growing older, prayed for the 9/11 victims, sadly said good bye to my BFF Carole (she's now an angel), was thankful I still had a job (economy took a nose dive), settled into my idyllic relationship with Ron, and watched my young wildflower daughter blossom into the beautiful, kind hearted, free spirited person she is today. Saw my father for the last time before he took off to places unknown....hope to see him again someday. My 60s are rejuvenating (Retired at 60): I Sleep in, partake in hobbies, attend plays, read good books, go on long walks and road trips, hang out with friends and family (my brother Steve and sister Phyllis live close by), root at Rivercat games (Sacramento minor league baseball - but always a diehard Dodger fan), let Sofie worry about me for a change (LOL), volunteer (past time to give back), continue to renew friendships with my old friends found via social media, cherish life as more of those close to me leave this earth too soon, enjoy my menagerie of pets, and especially savor my relationship with Ron. All in all, life has been good to me. I smile a lot and love to laugh. I will always be thankful for my family and friends. I am also thankful for all those that have touched my life in a positive way, including all of you that I went to school with so very long ago in that mystical land called Fontana. Throughout life's hardships, good fortune, bad decisions, right choices, heartache, joy, hard work, and just plain dumb luck, I wouldn't change a thing.
