Nancy's Story

I was born in Washington, D.C. in 1950, My family moved to Bladensburg in 1954. I attended Bladensburg Primary (a six classroom building) from 1956-1959, from there on to Bladensburg Elementary until March 1962. We moved to Upper Marlboro on April Fools Day 1962, so I transferred to Marlboro Elementary, then on to Frederick Sasscer High School until graduation in 1968. I briefly attended Prince Georges Community College but decided to go to work for the C&P Telephone Company, in the Engineering section as a Billings and Claims Clerk. I stayed there until my name changed and I became a housewife/stay-at-home mom. The '80s came, and well... Life happens. It wasn't long before I found myself working as an Instructional Aide for Anne Arundel County Public Schools at Van Bokklen Elementary, in Severn/Ft. Meade. It might well have been the greatest job I ever had, but it was short-lived. You can't pay the rent, feed, and clothe yourself and three growing children on $5800 a year, even in the 1980s. Fortunately, I landed a job with the Department of Defense in July 1985. My 25-year long career ended in retirement in March 2010. While working for the DoD I attended classes at Anne Arundel Community College for selfish reasons, mainly to improved my administrative and managerial skills and honestly, to better my chances of promotion. Let's just say, it worked. I've been single-again since 1984. I kept the only good that came of bad a 14-year marriage -- my three precious children. My then 7-year old daughter begged me to keep my name the same as hers, so I did. My interests and/or hobbies if you will include spoiling as best as I can my Grandchildren; always having at least one Cat to love; briefly raising Chickens (I miss my girls); a neverending love for Gardening; and Sewing aprons for family and friends just for the fun of it. I do enjoy listening to a somewhat...Expand for more
odd variety of music from the 50s & 60s to Country, and Easy Listening/cool jazz. On no particular Friday or Saturday evening when "Sara, Dale, and the Dukes" are playing at a nearby tavern, you might find me blending in with the locals. Words of Wit and Wisdom: 1. Smile, it makes everyone wonder what you've been up to. 2. Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end (from Closing Time by Semisonic) 3. I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't than live my life as if there isn't and die to find out there is. 4. God closes doors no man can open and opens doors no man can close. Silly and reverent trivia. Born on March 4th (the only day of the year that is a command. (March Forth!) Biblical verse: Colossians 3:4 NIV When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." Pride and Joy: God blessed me with a beautiful daughter and handsome son who have further blessed me (aka Nana) with four amazing granddaughters ranging in age from 10 to 20 (as of 2021) and two handsome step-grandsons, 24 and 31, [No great-grandchildren to date.] Lastly, I'm known as "Ms. G" by quite a few additional sons and daughters (not by birth) I've accumulated over the years, now grown and many with precious children of their own who consider me as Nana G or Nana-Nancy. My life, like everyone else's, has had its share of highs and lows, happiness and sorrow. I lost my second child, a son, greatly loved by many to cancer in 2010. Six years later, I, too, was diagnosed with cancer and I am now cancer-free. I don't ask why. I just have to trust that everything happens for a reason and someday I'll know God's reason for allowing me to outlive my son. And, if I never find it out, that's OK, too. I'm going to enjoy whatever extra time He has given me to the fullest. That's my story, up to now. :-)
