Nancy's Story

Life Graduated VA Tech, 1975 with BA in English. Taught 6th - 12th grades for 16 years in Hanover and Henrico Public Schools. Lived in Mechanicsville, VA from 1975 - 1994. Earned an MA in English (20th Century American lit-specialization in Fitzgerald and Hemingway) from VCU in 1986. Married and divorced; remarried and moved to Falmouth, VA in 1994. Taught at Germanna Community College for 14 years. I served at the first English Department Chair from 2003 - 2008; received the Chancellor's Scholarship (the head of the VA Com. College System) for Germanna to attend a week long Master Teacher Seminar to be held the 2nd week in July, 2011, at Hampton-Sydney College in south central Virginia. I was thrilled to receive the award and recognition as this seminar is expensive and a great professional development opportunity! Retired from the F/T faculty at Germanna in May, 2015. I was awarded Professor Emerita title, which is the highest honor a retiring faculty member can be given. My father is Professor Emeritus from George Washington University after 40 years on the faculty. I was most proud to be able to share the honor. I continued to teach at Germanna on a part-time basis, one class in the fall and spring semesters -- which was "a party" when one considers the difference between one class of English papers and five classes of English papers! I had always said that if I could find a "grading fairy," I would draw my last breath in the classroom! Now it's time to work on my book! As an adopted child, I found my birth family in the summer of 2001. When my cousin and I first talked on the phone, I could finish her sentences and she mine! It was an unfamiliar experience for one who has been a "round peg fitting into a square hole!" She has become my best friend as I have never known anyone who experienced the world the way I do! I am writing a book about how I found the family as it's a more incredible story than any work of fiction could begin to be: "art does indeed mirror life!" As I was born in Buchanan, VA, a little village tucked between two mountains where the James River flows through the middle of the town, one of those mountains is named Purgatory Mountain, thus my title: Born at the Foot of Purgatory Mountain! Adjunct teaching ceased, and book got put on hold as my parents' needs in 2016 changed. I had to move them out of Independent Living and into Assisted Living. It was so hard as my parents did not want to give up their independence, and they were in total denial of their inabilities to live on their own. And I became the HORRIBLE DAUGHTER WHO WAS BOSSING THEM AROUND! It was an awful experience. However, they quickly adjusted, and I took over all their finances and bills. That responsibility consumed my life for two years. If you are fortunate enough to have never had to do this, you have no idea how challenging and frustrating it can be. NOTHING is easy. Pete Vernimb, husband, is now retired from his position as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for Frederick County Public Schools in Winchester, VA. He successfully defended his dissertation to complete his doctorate in Ed. Leadership from VT on December 3, 2014. In 2018, he began a 3/5 position teaching at the University of Mary Washington in the graduate school for Administration and Supervision in the School of Education. The last three years, 2019, 2020, and 2021 have been awful. My younger sister, Sherry, died very suddenly on May 3, 2019. My mother-in-law died 4 months later. I flew to Naples, FL, to visit my parents in October, 2019. My Mom had dementia, and I knew during this visit that neither parent would live through 2020. Mom died in February, 2020, and I spent 3 weeks in Naples with my Dad, held her memorial service, a...Expand for more
nd stayed to be with Dad. I left in mid-March, and the next day, Dad's facility was closed to all visitors due to the pandemic. I had planned to return at the end of May, not knowing that such a visit would be impossible. I never saw him again as he died July 26, 2020, five days after his 98th birthday. Because of the pandemic and how bad Covid cases were in Florida, I did not fly down at all. Both parents were being buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The wait was 7 months, and I was finally able to hold a visitation and the burial on March 23, 2021. It proved to be worth the wait -- such a moving and powerful ceremony. Sadly, my 33 year marriage ended in mid-May when Pete and I separated. He is in Winchester, and I am in the house in Falmouth. The divorce will be final in November 2021. In August of 2021, I had to have a breast needle biopsy, leading to surgery for an excision biopsy at the end of September. It was a malignant tumor (which according to three doctors surprised them). Fortunately, it was caught in time: Stage 0, totally contained within the duct, and surgeon got all clean margins, so no further surgery is necessary. I learned a few years ago that my birth mother had ductal cancer at age 75. I have to undergo three weeks of radiation, probably at the end of November/early December. Additionally, I have to take Tamoxifen, an estrogen blocker, for 5 years, and enter a high-risk screening programming every 6 months. Given how it could have turned out, I am most relieved and very grateful for the eagle eyes of the radiologist who spotted the suspicious area on my x-rays. So the past three years have been incredibly stressful, and I am not sorry to say goodby to 2021! There is NO where to go but UP! Have 1 fur baby: PeeDee, a 6 yr. old rescued Boxer. He is such a love bug! I lost my 13 year old Boston Terrier, Maggie, in May of 2021. Once things calm down, and I get through my medical treatments, I plan to rescue a Boston or get a Boston puppy. My first Boston Terrier, Jasmine, and I were a certified Therapy Dog/Disaster Stress Relief team from 1997 - 2004; we visited nursing homes, the hospital, and the psychiatric hospital which were very rewarding, and Jasmine loved to "go visit." However, the most incredible, life-changing experience was working for a month with the victims' families from the Pentagon on 9/11. We began work on 9/13 at the Family Assistance Center in Arlington until 10/12. Jasmine and I, along with 15 other dogs and handlers, attended the National Memorial Service held on October 11th at the Pentagon. On the 10th anniversary of the attacks, I was notified that Jasmine and I were being honored at a ceremony at Liberty State Park, Jersey City, NJ, along with all the search and rescue teams and the search and recovery teams that worked Ground Zero and the Pentagon. In addition, they honored all the dog team volunteers by engraving our names on the National September 11th Memorial to be dedicated at Ground Zero next year. That was beyond humbling -- I remain still stunned by such an honor. I went to the ceremony, and sadly I went alone as my Jasmine is at the Rainbow Bridge. But I felt her presence and her boundless spirit of curiosity while there; of that I am sure! And now, 10 years later, I was really surprised at how emotionally I reacted on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th. I kept thinking of the families that I came to know, and their loved ones whom were lost that day. My heart was very heavy. If there's anything I've learned, it's that tomorrow is never guaranteed and REGRET will eat you alive! Say it, do it, live it, feel it, and go for it before it's too late! And looking forward to seeing everyone for our 50th (51st) Reunion on October 7th - 9th, 2022!
