Nancy's Story
Life
I attended Oak Grove Elementary and went on to Milwaukie High School and graduated in 1965. I left the area in 1966 and moved first to San Diego and then to Newport Beach, California. After living and attending school (San Diego City College and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa) in California, I came back to the Northwest again in the early 70's and have been in the Seattle area ever since. I attended the University of Washington and majored in Anthropology. I took a "temporary summer hire" for Metro Transit as bus driver during the King Tut exhibit in 1978, stayed beyond the summer job and eventually moved into a management position in 1988. For many years I ran the radio control center for the bus system but retired in April of 2009,
I am very interested in foreign travel and in 2004 traveled to remote areas in Southern China with a group of twelve women. We spent time in the mountains near Tibet and in areas along the Mekong River in addition to Bejing, Shanghai and Xian. It was quite an adventure to see places I had only read about before. In the late spring of 2005 my husband, sons and I traveled to Greece (Athens, Santorini and Rhodes) and also spent time in London. The fall of 2006 Larry and I spent time in London, Portugal and Southern Spain. In early 2007 I traveled to Southern India with a group of women and think it was the perfect way to begin my 60th year. I have seen most of the United States, some of Canada, Mexico and love seeing how other people live and spend their lives. I hope to go to Kenya in in the future to meet my foster daughter who I have been sending to boarding school. My husband and I enjoy spending a bit of time on Maui or Kauai in the wet winter to defrost a bit.
I have a daughter (who has seven sons) and she lives in the Spokane area where she is currently working as a RN. I also have sons who are 37 and 32 who live in the Seattle area plus my eldest grandson made me a great grand mother nine years ago! Last year Great-grandson, Locke, was born and around Thanksgiving #3.
My husband and I live in a small community south of Seattle but for many years I commuted into town every day for my work. I loved my work and enjoyed the people I worked with but I also looked forw...Expand for more
ard to retirement and now I can do more gardening, treat my husband to a home-made dinner every night and travel without having to schedule a vacation. I hope to spend time in many different parts of the world. In addion my husband recently got an Electra Glide Harley and we plan to take "rides" lasting from a few hours to several weeks in the future. A whole new way of seeing the world!
My sons are 37and 32 and through the years we have shared many adventures. They are great people and I find myself moving from the parent role to being "friends" with them as neither of them needs much guidance any longer and they are busy with their adult lives. Now they have their own lives but we still gather as a family to enjoy each other’s company.
One of the most interesting questions on the Q&A section is what would you do if you won a lot of money. I certainly would move my husband's full retirement up to "right now" but in many ways my life wouldn't change. I might try to make a difference in some other lives. I have been involved with an orphange in Kenya for AIDS orphans and am also sponsoring a 17 year old girl in Kenya who's parents both died of AIDS. I have paid for her to attend boarding school for her primary and now secondary education as I think making a significant difference in one life is better for me than smaller donations to many lives. I feel a special bond with these children as I was an orphan and was raised by relatives other than my parents. They are just starting life and it seems very hard for them. So I would do what I could to make life a little easier for them by taking care of some of the necessities that we all take for granted-good schooling, medical care and a safe place to live.
Politically I would say I tend to be certainly left of center and think it's sad how our country tries to solve problems in other parts of the world and fails to look at our own problems. I honestly feel more connected to local politics than national and find myself fairly disgusted with most national politicians.
School
I attended Oak Grove Elementary School and Milwaukie High School in Oregon. San Diego Junior College and Orange Coast Junior College in California and finally the University of Washington in Seattle.
