Nancy's Story

It's been a very long time since I was Denby student. I've always been proud of the education I received there and wish I had thanked my many excellent teachers more while I had the opportunity. I left a little early to attend the University of Michigan which had always been my dream. I met my husband there, we married, and had two children in Ann Arbor. The youngest was born on our graduation day so I missed the ceremony. (I was able to attend hers from U of M, however, some 21 years later. Karen met her husband there as well. Very cool!) A week after graduation, we all moved to Blue Bell, Pa where my husband worked as a computer systems analyst/manager while I taught school. Our careers were long and extremely satisfying. We became involved in some pretty serious white-water canoeing and kayaking as well as skiing while the kids were growing up. Many summers were spent traveling in some of our national parks where we camped and backpacked. The years were eventful, happy, and went by quickly. About ten years ago we "retired" in order to move to San Antonio where our daughter and her family are living. (Our son lives in Jackson, Wyoming, and that's just too cold for me.) Gary and I both "un-retired" to work for Harcourt/Pearson preparing tests and training people to score them. It was fun, much less demanding than our career jobs so we had time for our two granddaughters while they were growing up. The older is now a freshman at Texas A&M in College Station, and the younger is a high school junior here in San Antonio. Jackie spent two summers at Interlocken which was another Michigan connection for us. A couple of years ago I really retired and decided to focus on animal welfare and training which have always been major loves of mine. I volunteered at The Animal D...Expand for more
efense League (no-kill shelter) and fostered over a hundred orphan kittens over two years; we only adopted one. Gary and I worked with the staff trainer to socialize and obedience train some of their dogs. Last March we adopted a gorgeous young adult dog, Regal, and had our own project to add to the cat and our 4 large parrots (family members for 5-20 years). Regal is a wonderful dog, but he had probably never been in a house and needed to learn appropriate behaviors. He recently earned his Canine Good Citizen Certificate from the AKC; he is a real treasure. Adopt a shelter dog and/or cat always! Our latest project is fostering a Belgian Malinois puppy for the Department of Defense from Lackland afb. She is a real handful and we are using all of our dog skills, while adding more every day, to prepare her for military life. Malinois are incredibly energetic, prey-driven dogs which is why they are now primarily used in war zones. Ccorryn weighs less than half of Regal's 70 lbs. but when they play together she gives as good as she gets and usually ends up chasing him around the yard for more. She will go back to the base permanently in February to learn how to be what she was bred for--protection, sniffing explosives, jumping out of air craft with her handler, etc. It was a Malinois that went on the Osama bin laden raid, and I can see why. There are so many paths I could have chosen in life, and I've tried to pack in as much as possible. I raised a couple of happy, successful kids, had a meaningful career that I loved, enjoyed the outdoors, read many books, lived with the same wonderful man for nearly 50 years. Not a lot of time left, but I'm trying to make the most of it. I've been extremely fortunate and am most grateful for all that I have accomplished and enjoyed.
