Nancy's Story
Hi all, the class of 1971, You may remember me as a young women with very long blondish hair. I was often told I had beautiful hair. I was involved in timing for the swim team as my boyfriend off and on was Mark Barber. He and I don't even know each other these days. He want into the Navy and we dated one year after that and parted. I do know he is married and lives in Taylor,MI with his wife and boys. That is all I know. If anyone knows him, I would love to say hi to him.
Anyway, I graduated from Northern Michigan University(Marquette, UP) in Nursing and came back down state and worked for the University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital in Pediatrics (sick newborn to 18mo) in Ann Arbor. I was there for about 15 yrs. I also after graduation, worked for Marinette General Hospital in WI and lived in Menominee, MI. It was less than a year and I moved downstate. I married John in 1976. He's a great guy and works in the auto industry. He has worked in that industry all his career life and currently does product planning at design at the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI. We have been married 37 yrs and still live in Ann Arbor.
We adopted a 3 month old girl who we named Katherine, Kate in 1982.She was 10 weeks premature weighing 3# 1oz. She has been the light of our live At 9 months we were told she had cerebral palsy. She had manor stiffness in her legs and required several surgical procedures while growing up. I also worked at Child Health Associates in A2. Kate is now 31yrs old and lives in Canton. Her disability though does not stop her in any way. She is college educated and has traveled the world for school and other events, even saw the Pope John Paul II in Paris. She has written a book and has a New York City literary agent. I tried to work as a young mom, and I returned to Mott and Child-Health Associates. I had a hard time working with so much needed for Kate and I finally just sold MaryKay Cosmetics while Kate was in school. When Kate went into high school I started back to work, part-time. I became a pharmaceutical sales rep for several drug companies from part time to full time ( a really hard job, not that nursing is easy but I was working 60 to 65 hours a week.) I worked until I had to retire in 2001 due to rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. ...Expand for more
This has been hard because I have been in a lot of pain but still wanted to do something in my life. After many med changes and knee replacements and physical therapy I am stable.
I currently volunteer in the homeless shelter in A2 with my church, St Francis Catholic, and I am also a "tribute Rosie the Riveter " for the Yankee Airforce Museum in Belleville, MI. In the 1940's women made airplanes to fight in WWII and had they not done some of this heavy work like riviting and welding we might have not won World War II. This plant is about 30 minutes from Bentley High. This was the first time women worked in a man"s job (men were at war over seas) and made the same wages as men. Henry Ford insisted on this. At Yankee we are trying to preserve the old Bomber plant (which was GM's powertrain plant until 2000 when it closed) that was used in the 1940's when Henry Ford owned the plant. THe Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run wants to buy this old Willow Run Bomber Plant. Yankee and the Michigan Aerospace Founation are raising money to save the bomber plant at Willow Run to put the museum there. This plant made B24 bombers in the 1940's. These are the planes made by women in the Arsenal of Democracy. The Rosies have made a video. Look at savethebomberplant dot org to see me dancing in this. I am on the far right in the back. If you live in Michigan please take this as personal invite to come to the BelIeville area where the museum is and visit the Yankee Airforce Museum. The web site is yankeeairforcemuseum, dot org. The Rosie the Liberator is also on u-tube. We wrote and produce the video ourselves. It is great fun.
I would love to hear for any of you. I am not on facebook so contact me here.

PS, I am still long time friends with Jan Anderson (called Bunny by her family and me) She is married with grown sons, living in Tampa, FL. She has been in Florida since 1977. She was our class Treasure and got her BS in Med Technology from Uof Michigan and went on to get a masters in Product Planning from University of South Florida. She is happy and the same giving, bright, kind and outgoing individual she was in high school. If you contact me about her, I will give you her email address. I have encouraged her to stop by this site. NjhZ
