Nancy's Story
One of my heros was Mrs. Durgin. She taught science at Riverton Public. I admired her intellect, but also the fact that she looked so attractive every day. No slacking for her. And I never forget that. So many people let themselves go as they get older. Someone said on our last trip back to NJ that she still looked good.
For years I wanted to be a nurse, but in my Freshman year of HS Latin was not my best subject, especially since it was back to back with Geometry (same teacher). I switched from College Prep to Business. That one decision changed the course of my life.
My Dad was involved in the RCA plant layoff. He actually took an early layoff since he knew it was inevitable. In Feb. 1964, he went to work with IBM in Huntsville, Alabama. I left with him and we left the rest of the family (3 younger sisters, Ginny, Pat and Debbie in New Jersey until we could find a house. The space program was booming in Huntsville and housing there was scarce. In Apr. 1964 the rest of the family arrived in Huntsville and my Mom had my brother, Richard Jr.
I finished HS in Alabama. Dated a lot, but never dated anyone very long. The wildest thing I ever did and I do regret it, is the newly planted cotton field my friend and I went through with my brand new 1966 Red Chevelle.
Went to work for the Government in Jul. 1965. How that happened I don't know, because I was definitely the class comic in my typing class.
In Aug. 1967 I married Jim Betterton, a dashing young AF guy, in 1967 and we had three daughters and one son--Kimberly, Laura, Lydia, and Joey. We did a 2 1/2 year tour of duty in Germany - that was interesting. Toward the end of our marriage we were missionaries in Hyderabad, India for almost a year.
I eventually went back to work for the Government and became a single Mom in 1987. I attended Whitesburg Baptist Church singles group, met and married Fan King, a very successful Govt. manager and worked with a singles' group for almost 10 years, teaching classes and doing informal counseling. My Mom died of breast cancer in Apr. 1988. The next Fall I signed up for college and finished with a BS in Management of Technology in Dec. 1995.
In 2000 I again found myself single. Met up again with my husband Tracy Brown Jan. 2001. My Dad died in Feb. 2001 and I continued to date Tracy long distance for 2 years. Then I tr...Expand for more
ansferred with the Govt. to Ohio in Jan. 2003. I went back to school and received my MBA Jun. 2005. I retired from the Gov't in April 2007 and we were married on September 15th of that year. We even had Elvis at the reception!
Whoops, I wasn't retired for a month and the US Coast Guard in Cleveland offered me a job as a contracting consultant with a great group of professionals. But alas that too came to an end and I took over Tracy's 27-year-old company Computer Room Design Corp in 2010. It is my dream job finally.
In addition to four children, I now have one stepson William, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. This means I'm the mother of a grandmother and I'm finally a great grandmother!.
To all of you who had any contact with me over the years (even in school), know that you are not forgotten. I think of you often. I think of the fun we had and also the struggles and how far we have come.
Long distance dating is hard, but if you really care about the person it is worth it.
I miss my kids since they are so scattered now; however,. Kimberly my oldest is close by in Cleveland. Laura is married and in North Carolina. Lydia and her family finally returned from Japan and are living in Indiana. Joey my son is in Louisville, Kentucky with his family. The nice thing is they are only a phone call or text message away!
One of the things I learned from my kids is that they don't want things as much as they want you and the time you spend with them. Having worked most of my life I felt a need to give them everything they needed and wanted (if I could). So, it is easy to get off track.
One of my favorite shows is the TV show "The Ghost Whisperer". The concept is great and I can see that it would be important for people to make peace with others before they "cross over". However, Housewives of NJ is a close second. How crazy are their lives!
Finally got the pool table out of the living room! Pool is one of my husband's passions and I certainly believe one should pursue their passions! We are finally in the country on a farm. Love the wildlife out here!! They have drama too!
I think that if I won a million dollars, I would start a farm for troubled youth, then the rest would be enjoyed by my whole family.
Dreams are still important, even at our age, and I still have many. To be continued . . . .
