Nancy's Story

Back then I was Ellen Sorensen. I came to Sanders, AZ when I was in 5th grade, and continued attending until I graduated in 1980, as Valedictorian. Fernando Duran was Saludatorian, and I barely remember the graduation, it was so long ago. I do recall our 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Long. She was crazy. I know because she was removed and put into a hospital for awhile, as well as her son. I remember the horrible times she put me through. I also remember some really GREAT times with my classmates, and my best friends there. Susan, Jackie, Jennifer, and others. All my friends who probably wouldn't even know me now, because I'm no longer that shy reserved girl I once was. Amazing, isnt it? I have so appreciated having Facebook to keep in touch, for what it's worth. I am a gramma now, with two sons and a daughter, and four grandkids. My daughter is following in my footsteps as a teacher (a French teacher), in Kansas. I am doing what I always wanted to do - teach. I work in a terrific Christian school, teaching technology, and working with middle school students. I am also the IT person for the entire school, which I never expected, but it affords me the freedom to do other things that I wouldn't otherwise be able to do. After graduating from Valley High, I went on to college in Phoenix, to Grand Canyon University, where I graduated four years later. I didn't get into teaching right away, and was married and had our first child that year. We moved to Michigan after she was a year old, where I stayed at home for several years. My son was born a year later, and it wasn't until he was six that I realized that my ex-husband had some serious mental illnesses. I left and managed to get away safely to North Carolina. When the divorce was finalized we all breathed a sigh of relief. In North Carolina things just continued to improve. Although I didn't get into teaching, I managed to work to support us, and we were very happy here. I met the man of my dreams here, and after a few years we were married. Although the road has not been an easy one, and we have seen our share of troubles and trials, we have managed to persevere and stay together. My daughter had some issues and was in a group home ...Expand for more
for awhile, after which she received a full ride to college, where she graduated cum laude with a degree in teaching and in French. She married right out of high school, but divorced a year later, then after a year off she ran into an old flame visiting from Kansas. She followed him out there, married him, and now they have a beautiful baby girl. I home schooled my son from seventh grade through ninth. He tried public school again for tenth grade, but by the end of that year I was feeling the urge to get back into teaching again, and found a Christian school that welcomed me with open arms. They also welcomed my son, and he eventually graduated from there, then went on to join the Army National Guard and work full time. He did finally meet the girl of HIS dreams, and they are married now with a beautiful little boy. My husband, Bobby, has a son for whom I can take no credit, but of whom I am extremely proud. Not only is he an extremely polite and well mannered young man, but he went on to join the local police department where he has excelled at everything that he has attempted, including the canine unit. He met and married a girl he had known before, who had two children from her previous marriage, and now they have given us a wonderful pair of grandchildren that we could not have asked for better. So my life is full, with a great career, terrific family, and loving husband and children. Recently we bought our first home and we finally feel like we are settling into this life of a "normal" American household, but there is still the feeling that there are so many things left to do. At age 52 (almost 53) I feel that i still have so much to accomplish. God is my strength, Jesus is my closest friend, and where I was only two years ago about to retire with a disability, I am able to work full time and accomplish a ministry that is rich and full. I feel that there is still so much more to do, and I am thankful that I am still able to kick around and do it. Recently my hubby and I attended a Financial Peace University weekly class, and now we are getting our finances in order, and I can only imagine what we will be able to do once we are debt free and building wealth. Life is good.
