Nanette's Story
Life
After graduation I followed the scholarship trail. This earned me a Bachelor of Arts in English and French at Southwestern in Weatherford and a Master of Arts in English Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Ten years later, I completed a Master of Divinity degree at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary on the campus of Northwestern University. Since graduation I have worked as a glassware washer in a microbiology lab, front help in an A&W, a researcher on a Womens Studies project, an English composition tutor, a high school remedial reading teacher, a junior high English teacher, an electronics factory line worker, an administrative assistant in a regional media center, a library assistant in a seminary library, a switchboard operator, an academic researcher for theology professors, a Methodist minister, an administrative assistant in a statistics department, an account representative for a private pension plan, a catalog sales representative and now an acc...Expand for more

When I arrived in my 40s, I realized that I was rather old for child-bearing and had a momentary crisis. That passed quickly though when I acknowledged that I thoroughly enjoyed the role of eccentric aunt and decided to give Mame a run for her money. As for the husband thing, well, to quote Gloria Steinem, "I dont mate well in captivity."
In 1998 I was down-sized from the private pension plan where I worked. Two weeks later my father was diagnosed with a degenerative brain disorder that is very similar to ALS. I returned to southwest Wisconsin where my parents had retired and moved into a mobile home next to my parents house. I found a job working for Lands End Business Outfitters which has turned out to be an extraordinary place to work even with a 54 mile commute. My fathers health has slowly and steadily deteriorated and he now lives in a nursing home three blocks from me. My mother had triple bypass surgery in September 2001.
