Nathaniel's Story

Life I went through all 4 years of public high school at Belleville West and someone told me I wasn't smart enough to get through life. So, I went back to school for a little while longer. I soon realized I was only reading, not learning. I joined the Air Force to go experience some of what I had read about. To enlist, I had to take a test, (based on knowledge of what I'd read, not experienced) which said I was a prime candidate for broadcasting. I was given a very similar postion to that which was dramatized in the movie 'Good Morning Vietnam.' It was fun, I was stationed in the Pacific for a little over three years. There I mainly reported military news from places like Korea, Japan, Guam, New Guinea, Thailand, and Singapore. I learned a lot, but after 4 years of it, I figured I was learning too much too fast, so I decided to go back to school and read some more. While I was in school, I met a woman I thought was really bright, Laura. She told me the smartest thing I could do was marry her. So, I did. Not too long after that, Shelby, the most brilliant thing ever came into my life, weighing 8 lbs 5 oz. It's a good thing she gets her wits from her mother, because being a father can make you feel pretty clueless sometimes. Soon after Shelby entered the picture, I was offered a job with the federal government, doing what they told me I did best. The position first took me to Upstate NY. After a quick look around, Laura and I both noticed we were the smartest people up there. Wanting to feel smart for a little while, I took the job. The area had very little off...Expand for more
er, but the position had upward mobility. Knowing we didn't want to live there forever, we did the smart thing and spent the first year and a half apart while I tried for a promotion. A few positions were offered to me at the same time. One in Kentucky, one in Germany working for a former boss, and one in Belgium. Tired of being the smart one, I knew the first two wouldn't be good choices. So, Laura and I moved off to Belgium to experience more of what we had read about in school. We set up camp about about 20 min south of Brussels, Belgium. After a few local Kasteel Biers, (beer @ 11% alc) I felt that was the smartest move I had made in a long time. But, someone from Germany called me and said I'd be foolish if I didn't accept another promotion in Heidelberg Germany. So for knowledge/courage, I stocked up on Kasteel and we headed down the Autobahn. We now live in a quaint village in the mountains and enjoy our share sour kraut, sausages, and schnitzel (Sounds like Belleville doesn't it?) with an occasional boost of knowledge coming from Riesling, Auslace, or Eiswein. I feel fortunate to have had smart people around me to help me make the decicsions that have taken me where I am now. Lately, I feel a little smarter. From what I hear that's good, because in about another ten and a half years, Shelby will be a teenager and I'll be completely clueless all over again. If you're one of the smart people that I've met along my journey, please take a moment to let me know how things are in your world and we can talk about the smart and dumb things we remember doing.
