Neal's Story

I worked about twenty years as a computer programmer, earning a couple of patents along the way. Sick to death of it, I finally went back to my real ("humanities") interests in theatre and creative writing. In the last few years I have had a couple of short one-act plays produced at small theatres in Chicago, and I've also written two full-length screenplays, one of which was a finalist in a recent contest sponsored by the Illinois and Chicago Film Offices. I've also had a number of essays (and theatre reviews) published in various Chicago newspapers. Still no girlfriend, alas. But I treasure the memory of every woman I've been fond of over the years, from grade school and junior high to high school and beyond. And with the tragic death (from cancer) of my sister last year, and my dad's passing years ago (also from cancer) at only age 59, I've been confronted with the realization that the end is far nearer than the beginning... and have come to realize the value of, and cherish, all things. Best wishes to all, Neal [P.S. The pic...Expand for more
ture was taken about eight yeras ago, back on September 4, 2000.] UPDATE (1/14/2013): This is the first time I've logged in in years, in part due to the worst possible thing happening on November 3rd, 2011 (fourteen months ago). I got a call from the police that my younger sister, Deb, had been found dead. (Yes, this is on top of my older sister dying of cancer a few years ago and my dad dying of cancer way back in 1996.) Deb was the most important person to me in the whole world, in part due to the large age difference (in some ways I thought of her as the daughter I never had), and the fact that we were so alike in our views on things (everything from vegetarianism to what movies and plays we liked) and so different from most of the world. I hope to write a book about her (and my troubled family) someday, but in the meantime I'm just trying to survive and get back to working on my plays and screenplays. Please don't hesitate to contact me at nealr at core dot com. (Who knows the next time I'll log on here.) Best wishes, Neal
