Neal's Story

After graduating from HIgh School I went to the University of Utah for two years and then I joined the US Army. Was sent to Fort Ord, California and then to Transportatio School at Fort Eustis Virginia. After completing Transportation school I was transfered to Headquarters Us Army Europe in Heidelberg Germany for the duration of my enlistment.I was assigned to the Headquarters Commandant section. I left the Military in October of 1957, and returned home. I re-enrolled at the U and returned to classes. I only completed one year at this time. I was employed by Hercules at Magna Utah for about 18 years and was involved with the Management of the Engineering Data Center for about 9 years, then I was transfered to the Facilities department where I was a Facilities analyst. During this 18 Year period I was married and lived in Hunter Utah. In 1972 I was contacted by the Veterans Administration and informed that I was eligible for 4 years of additional University Education. I immediately contacted my Department Manager and asked if it would be possible for me to shift my work hours to accomodate a full time educational schedule. He said yes so I immediately re-enrolled at the U and started a new study course. In 1977 I received a degree in Economics. I also relocated to San Diego County at that time. I was the Employed as Assistant Superintendant of Port Maintenance for the San Diego Unified Port District, where I was directly responsible for all of the Maintenance for everything above the Mean High Tide line around San Diego Bay, This included 6 parks, Two Marine Terminals and all of the structures on them, San Diego International Airport, all of the streets and roads in the district and about 300 miles of Rail Road Tracks. I had about 120 people working on this project. In 1980 I decided to return to Industry and joined Hewlet-Packard where I worked for the next 20 years. I retired in October of 2000. king at HP and she retired in July of 2000 after 23 years. She was the HP Credit Union Branch Manager. I was the Facilities Services Manager at the Rancho Bernardo Site.As such I had responsibility for virtually all of the Services within the facility. This included 75 Acres of highly landscaped grounds, and all services within 12 buildings, (Approx 2 million square feet of space, with close to 2500 engineers and all of the manufacturing space needs. I was also responsible for the Solid Waste Program and created a site wide re-cycling program that was able to place about 1 Million Dollars per year back into the Facilities Operating budget. After retirement Nancy and I moved to a new home in Oceanside, Ca. where we currently reside. We have continued to travel to as many places in the world as we can. We have been to New Zealand, the Marianas Islands, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark and Sweden, Alaska, Mexico ,Guatemala, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Peru, Chile and Canada. We have just returned from a two week tour of England, Scotland and Ireland and visited many beautiful and historically significant places such as Hadrian's wall , the Roman Baths in England, and the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh Scotland and many other places. Nancy and I have currently been married for 50 years. We have 3 sons and one Daughter. Currently we have 9 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Almost all of them live fairly close by. We recently added solar to our home and it amazing to see the electric meter run in reverse. Should have done it sooner. We have lived in three locations in California, Escondido for about 7 years, Encinitas for about 15 years and now in Oceanside since 2001. Since retirement Nancy and I have travelled fairly exstensively. 18 Ocean cruises, One river cruise in Europe, and Annual trips to Puerto Vallarta Mexico. We are both in excellent health
