Neil's Story

After graduation in 1962, I went to work at Lakeside Amusement park as a barrel walker in the fun house. We worked 6-days a week. Weekdays we worked from 12pm to 12am. Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 2am. That lasted until about the middle of July. On July 24, 1962 I enlisted in the US Navy and was immediately sent to recruit training in San Diego. I graduated on Oct. 8 and started going to school at the Navy Training Center in San Diego as a Fire Control Technician. That had nothing to do with burning fire, but firing guns or missiles. I departed San Diego in May 1963 for school at Mare Island Schools Command, about 30 miles north of San Francisco. I graduated in September and reported to the USS Oklahoma City CLG-5, light missile cruiser. I was a crew member until early November when I reported to the Pre-commissioning crew on the USS Chicago CG-11, heavy missile cruiser. I helped put her in commission on May 2, 1964. I was a crew member until October 13, 1969 when I reported to US Naval Instructor School in San Diego. I graduated in December and reported to Mare Island Schools command, Talos System school as an FTM2 Instructor. In February 1970 I married Bobbie Lee Teresa Irene Katherine Capp in Winterhaven, CA. In November 1970 we welcomed the birth of our first child, Joey Marie Kleinman. In April 1972 we welcomed our second child, Lisa Georgette Kleinman. Bobbie and I split up in 1973 and were divorced in October 1974. In the interim I met my second wife, Karen Elise Pound and we were married as soon as my divorce was final, on October 26, 1974. Karen had 3 daughters but the oldest eventually moved in with her father in Napa, CA. Ka...Expand for more
ren was an RN at Memorial Hospital in Long Beach. In 1979 Karen and I split up for about 6 months, got back together and moved to Cypress, CA. In 1989 after all but one of the kids had moved out, we moved to Santa Ana for about 6 years. Eventually we moved back to Cypress into the add-on apartment of a dear friend Deanne Leapley. On November 22, 2004, Karen succumbed to flesh eating bacteria. I moved about 3 months later to a condo in Anaheim and lived there for 7 years. I then moved to a one-bedroom apt. in Anaheim. Karen's middle daughter Kathy has had 2 children, Zachary and Jenna. Karen and I tended Zachary for the first 4 years of his life. At one point I was the relative caregiver for Zachary due to his and his sister's being taken from their home because of his parent's behavior, drinking and fighting. In April 2011 Zachary and Jenna returned to their mother. I still have Zachary with me on Saturday and Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I miss my wife today as much as the day she passed on and have not been actively seeking another companion or relationship. Very briefly in 2010 I had a short relationship with the mother of a girlfriend of a neighbor in Anaheim, but it didn't work out, and I wasn't really disappointed. The relationship was mostly spurred on by the daughter and neighbor. I am looking for work as an instructor, technical writer or curriculum developer in just about any technical trade. I was an electrical instructor for WyoTech in Long Beach for about 7 months. I am a professional and church musician, playing Piano, guitar and bass guitar. I also sing and have been a member and lead singer in a Barbershop Quartet.
