Neil's Story

Life My wife (Patti) and I met while we both were members of the Royal Cavaliers Youth Band (RCYB); she was a member of the drill team (baton team) and also the first majorette in the Los Angeles School District (Monroe High School) to perform at football-game half-time shows and I was a member of the drum-lines for (Reseda High School & RCYB) and orchestra with Monroe High School. Played drums with the Bob Mantzke Singers. Drum instructor and teacher - students and drum & bugle corps. Patti and I recently celebrated our 48th! My Kids Three wonderful children. My eldest son and his wife has two boys and a girl. My second son is married and his wife have two children from a previous marriage (girls). My daughter is married and recently had a baby girl! So... that's six grand children. I am proud of all my kids! My Job Project Leader & Principal Investigator, Operations Management (currently, a Project Controls / Management Analyst) supporting research and development at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Retired March 14, 2008, 2 1/2 months shy of 34 years working in the computer, networks and electronics career fields. Diver with the Alameda County Sheriff Office (ACSO) (15+ years - now retired, (highest rank held - Captain) School Mrs. Freeman, Science, Sequoia Jr. High, In a positive way. Mr. Thomas, Monroe High School, History, "You are stupid,... If you don't get the highest final grade in all my classes, you won't graduate." That was real inspiration! I missed 8 1/2 weeks of school due to a motorcycle accident, and oh, I graduated! Colleges Getting another college degree was hard work especially latter in life (nobody said it was going to be easy) but the rewards were and are many, especially when I was selected to give the commencement speech at my graduation proceedings from Saint Mary's College, Moraga, Ca. That was a real kick!! Workplace After serving in the United States Air Force, after HVAC school, I worked a bit in the air-conditioning, refrigeration and heating business until I realized I could do more (more challenging meaningful and fulfilling) work. I went back to school again and received degrees ...Expand for more
in computers & electronics. This was my ticket to get a job offer for employment from Control Data Corporation (CDC) (Feb. 1974), and the previous refrigeration training also added to that job offer success. My family and I left the SF Valley and headed north to take up residence in Livermore, Ca. I went back to school again - 2200 of a total of 4300 hrs with CDC while being assigned to Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (LRL, LLL, LLNL). I left CDC on 12/31/80, and took a position within the Electronics Engineering Department at LLNL, where I began my career as the Hardware / Operations Manager for the Technology Information Systems Program (TISP). At TIS, we were developing Internet technologies (LANS, ARPA and DARPA nets) and network / communications security techniques (NOT...GORE), UNIX BSD, E-mail and other leading edge Intelligent Gateway Technologies of which some have been implemented into the public sector. Although there are many great highlights to be proud of at LLNL, none are more inspiring than when the Program Leader and I gave a presentation at the Executive Office of the President (White House) of e-mail, intellegent computeing gateways and internet technologies. I am still employed at LLNL and am currently a Project Leader / Management, and enjoying each and every challenge that comes my way. I can hardly wait for retirement... OOOPS, I retired March 14, 2008., although still way too young! I have done consulting work for some Silicon Valley firms. Other highlights and significant Projects and Programs worked on at LLNL include: Transportation Systems Research-Electric Vehicles, Aluminum Air Battery, Fly-wheel and Electric Powered Roadways, "O"-Group - Star Wars, AVLIS, NIF and Safeguards and Security (DOE Complex). I want to enjoy whatever time I have left on this Earth enjoying my grandchildren. I have taken up Ballroom dancing with a passion and have done and am doing extremely well. Traveled to Hawaii for a competition and did extremely well (Really!). I have taken coachings from numerous World Champions in both Ballroom and Latin dance. Military Glad to have been there....Proud to have served! Go Air Force!!!!
