Neil's Story
Life
Update: I will, but May of this year, have received my PhD in music from UNCG. I am the artistic director for a summer music camp in the Florida Keys. This year was a better one health wise as I lost about 40 pounds and got back to running (well jogging - for now).
After HS, I spent about three days at the Air Force Academy before realizing that I was there not for myself, but for my father. I left the ASAF and spent a year at Rutgers in math and physics, but got bored with the course of study. Music was more a challenge for me, so I went that way. Although I have had some success in this field, I know I would be financially better off as an engineer of some sort.
I received a BS and MA in Music Education and Music Composition at the College of NJ (formerly TSC) and taught in Dunellen for four years. During my first year I married my present (and only) wife, Dawn. Dawn had two beautiful little girls, 6 and 4, whom I adopted during the first year of our marriage. This turned out to be a Godsend because we have been unable to have children of our own - my only real lifelong regret.
After 4 years teaching at DHS, I moved to NC where I began teaching in a middle school and at Duke University as Marching and Pep Band director. After 11 years of the two job insanity, I left the public school job and launched my own publishing company to supplement my Duke pay. I write music for marching bands all over the country from coast to coast. I have had arrangements in a major motion picture and, along with my wife, have written many songs...Expand for more
as well as a complete musical. I have com, pleted everything towards a PhD in music education, but the dissertation, because I got (very) sick at that stage and could not complete it. I am attempting to complete my doctorate at another institute.
Please feel free to email me. As I cannopt put email addresses in this bio, just look me up at the Duke University site, or put my last name in a search engine. I love to hear from old friends and people I knew "way back when." I only wish I had known more of you as closer friends.

Workplace
After colege about 6 years of it) I was playing a lot and enjoying myself. Then I decided to get married so I had to get a real job. I have taught in 4 public schools over 16 years and spent 16 years at Duke University as band director (this year 2003-04 will be my 17th). I run my own arranging service and publishing company. I write music for schools all around the country, as well as once in a while music for film, stage, etc. My wife and I write original music for all kinds of venues and enjoy making music professionally (and personally).
I still have not reached all of my life goals in this field, which makes life still interesting. I have a lot of goals and, since I have never been "overpaid" at my work, I will have the rest of my life to work toward these goals! (which is a nice way of saying that I will probably not get to retire!)
