Neil's Story
After finishing at Kimball I went to college in Oklahoma (Oklahoma Christian) didn't finish, and married Sandy Sexson, a surfer girl from California. Ran a steakhouse in Oklahoma City, then Alexandria, LA. for about 2 years. Moved to Torrance, CA in 76, ran restaurants, worked for Bank of America, had a son (Kevin) in 79 and moved to Palm Springs, CA in 81 while still working for B of A. When they downsized in 88, I went back to school, finished my degree and started teaching in Palm Springs Unified. Became an assistant coach for boy's basketball at Cathedral City HS, which I did for 13 years. In 2000 Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer, had surgery, and was clear of the disease, but the effects of chemotherapy were evident.
In Aug. of 07 we moved to Las Vegas where I taught high school English While there, we had the first "snow day" without school in Vegas in 30 years, and the first time I had played in snow in 35 years! Sandy was diagnosed with dementia in 2015, but we had known for a few years that the chemotherapy had affected her thinking. Kevin and I were her caregivers until her death on July 25, 2018. I retired September 1st, 2018.
Kevin, who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2013, and I moved to Tempe, AZ in April, 2020 just as everything shut down because of the pandemic. ...Expand for more
In January, 2021, I got bored and took a job checking groceries at the grocery store next door to our townhome complex. Ten months later, I resigned... 42 hours a week were more than I wanted.
We moved to see as many baseball games as possible at any level. I converted from the Tigers in 1971 when I started dating Sandy. I've been a LA Dodger fan for 50+ years now. Looking forward to getting back to Michigan for our "Class of 70 Turns 70" reunion!
Epilog: Way back in 2008, people started contacting me on this site. Among them was Diane Bogush. We started chatting on Facebook in earnest around 2019 in anticipation of the reunion. Soon we were conversing every day. In May, 2022, I flew to Sacramento and stayed a few days with Diane before we flew to Detroit for the reunion. After the reunion, we flew back to Sacramento and spent a few more days together. Diane and I had gone to Mark Twain Elementary together for 6th grade, but different junior highs. At Kimball, we moved in different circles. It had been at least 52 years since we had seen each other, but we clicked! I went back in September '22 to see her again and celebrate her 70th birthday! The picture on my profile is from a visit for New Years and Orthodox Christmas 2023. Love at 70 is possible! I cherish her and each moment we have together!
