Nellie's Story
Life
After graduating from Howard High and The College Formerly Known as Western Maryland, I attained my original goal of becoming a reporter and editor for a chain of newspapers based in Howard County, Maryland, where I grew up. I also did a local show on the then-new cable station there. After the newspapers were bought out by a rival company, I became a marketing executive for several architectural and engineering firms in the Baltimore area for about 6 years. I became a real estate agent in 1986 (so I could better control my hours -- any 80 of the week!) I had two daughters during a 22-year marriage.
I still live in Ellicott City (Mount Hebron neighborhood), and I base my real estate practice at Long & Foster in Columbia (410-715-2703 if you're thinking of moving!). Elyse graduated from University of Maryland, School of Music, got married, and is teaching instrumental music. Meredith majored in interior design at Philadelphia University, and is in grad school for architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, while working for high-end men's apparel shops in the Michigan Avenue dis...Expand for more
trict.
Although my business is pretty intense, I find time for swing dancing, mostly to live bands in the area, concerts, plays and museums. I'm rediscovering my creative side through gardening, fabric arts, cooking, and redecorating my house. I'm still a liberal, given to occasional political comments which may be humorous only to me. It's an awesome blend that starts my every day off with the knowledge that life is great!
College
I went to Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College. It was my 'surrender' school -- my first choices for going into journalism were either all-male (glad those days are over!), or too large or urban or expensive for my parents' tastes. I got a good education in political science, but everybody looked the same -- something my daughters have really been avoiding as they've chosen colleges.
Going to Johns Hopkins for my masters in organization development -- I "fell into" a program there -- was really a great experience. It was so much more exciting and challenging than Western Maryland had been, and that's something I've encouraged my girls to feel, too.
