Nick Coady:

CLASS OF 1970
Mississauga, ON

Nick's Story

Life After high school, I went to York University--mainly because I wasn't sure what I wanted to study and York allowed for a general first year. I eventually decided on a BA in psychology, but took many humanities courses as well. The four year degree took me seven years to complete, however. Apart from being a slow learner, this was because every other year I took a year off to work and travel (mostly doing the hippie backpacking thing in developing countries--Central America, North Africa, Asia, Middle East). I lived at home in Mississauga for first year, but after that lived in Toronto (I lived one year in residence at York, and then lived downtown Toronto with various groups of friends I'd met in residence). Following undergrad, I worked in social services in Toronto for a few years (group home and community work with adolescents and their families). After another backpacking trip (this time to Central and South America with my eventual wife), I did a Master's in Social Work degree at Wilfrid Laurier University (1980-1982). After this I returned to work in social services with youth in downtown Toronto again. I got married in 1984 (yes, I held out until I was 33) to Laurie, whom I had met working in social services in Toronto (although she is from Northern Ontario). I returned to school in 1985 to do a PhD in social work at U. of Toronto (I got tired...Expand for more
of working and figured teaching might be easier). We had our first daughter, Devyn, in 1987. In 1988, we moved to Calgary for my first teaching position at University of Calgary. We stayed there for almost 6 years, but then returned to Ontario in 1994. I got a teaching position with Wilfrid Laurier (in social work--yes, they hired me even though they knew the hippie I was when I did my MSW). I've been in this job for the past 11+ years--the longest I've ever worked or lived in one place! We had our second daughter, Blaire, in 1994 (yes, I'm 54 and I have an 11 year old). Laurie is working as a social work manager at a local children's mental health centre. Our oldest daughter is now midway through first year university (at Wilfrid Laurier, but in residence). Our youngest is in grade 6 and has a long way to go. Life is busy, and time is passing all too quickly, but we're happy. I've been a runner for the past 11 years and I still enjoy playing golf and pool and follow most sports. I also enjoy hoisting a few beer now and again. I haven't been in touch with anyone from high school for quite a while, but have fond memories of Applewood for the most part. Strangely, it doesn't seem that long ago (35 years is nothing in the larger scheme of things). I hope everyone else is doing well and I would enjoy hearing from anyone who remembers me. Best wishes, Nick.
