Nick's Story

High School Times: Through most of high school I was kind of quiet. The great friends I had, helped me over that wall, and in my Senior year, I kind of broke out of the "Being silent is safe" mode. Started college, worked full time, and got married, had a son who is now 37, and divorced. I started with Pinkerton's, Inc. as an undercover investigator, then general investigations, and finally into the security end of the business. My company then transferred me to Chicago, where I was trained in National Security, and was granted a Final Top Secret Security Clearance from the Defense Department... The highest clearance you can receive. From that position I was transitioned into the capacity of Manager of Nuclear Security for the North Central Region of the U.S., and received thorough training by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This involved all of what is involved in the making of nuclear energy, its uses, makeup, and as my instuctor once said about the disaster side of it..."If you see me running...try to keep up!" part of Nuclear Reactors. I then was trained in the proper uses of Ordinance used for the protection of each site, and the methods I would use in my role as trainer of security personnel. I worked in this capacity until late 1977, just after I remarried, and started working for Conoco Oil Company as an Assistant Territory Manager. After hearing of a job lead...Expand for more
back here in Grand Rapids, I interviewed at The Grand Rapids Press about four or five times, and was hired there in January of 1979. My wife Chris and I pulled up stakes and moved back here to start a 6 month trial to see if I liked working at a newspaper. Thirty-one years later, I have retired from The Press as a Distribution Center Manager, which involved supervising District Sales Managers, Part-time assistants, and close to 300 contractors and store accounts in most of northwest and northern Michigan. Chris and I have been married for over 32 years now, and have had two daughters. Missy is 29, married, and has three children, 6, 2,& 1! Heather is 25 and has one child. Finally got my BA in 1996, and need four more classes to finish up my Business Management Degree to go along with it. At almost 60 though...don't count on it! Ha Ha! I've been very lucky to lead the life I have, and all of the experiences that have gone along with it. I like to say that "I know a little bit about alot"! I am enjoying retirement, have hunted more days this year than in the past ten, and am lucky enough to "have" to take my wife on at least three to four weeks of fishing trips each year! Of course, she gets the front of the boat as well, but as long as we're on the water enjoying ourselves...who cares. That's about it for now...if you have any questions, please ask...later my friends!
