Nima's Story

I've been on a pretty good adventure since high school. Having been a transplant from Orange County, CA to Manchester, NH (where I went to HS), I didn't really fit in at my HS. Being Iranian in NH didn't help either (and frankly, neither did my awkward stage). The one good thing about NH was my dad starting a jetski rental business by a lake. I got to run it in the summers. I even flew back for a couple of summers after college started. That was A LOT of fun. By college all that was behind me. I was very good looking, in great shape, and back in CA (UCLA). I met some great friends, had some great roommates, a couple of great girlfriends, and just got to experience a great college and college town. I went to UCLA as a Biology major with medical school intentions. After UCLA I got my Masters degree at Loma Linda University. I got a Masters in Public Health with a focus on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. My intention was to be a family doctor, viewing the patient as a whole person and following their lives as a whole and not just as snapshots whenever they got sick or hurt. My education at LLU taught me a lot toward that end. And, surprisingly, LLU being an Adventist school and me being Atheist/Agnostic, I fit in quite well. I made lots of friends and had some great girlfriends. During my time at LLU I had really gotten into computers. I would help my friends with their computer issues. About halfway through my degree, I actually decided that I wouldn't go to medical school and instead get into the I.T. industry. I finished my degree, but had no formal education or experience in computers. That's when I got really lucky. I found out that my sister-in-law's sister was about to marry a man who owns a computer training company in the DC area where my older brother lives. My brother lined up a job for me at that company and I moved to Maryland after graduation. So I was back on the East Coast, but this time in a lot better spot. I lived in Maryland just outside of DC. To this day I say that if I live anywhere on the East Coast again it will be the DC area. The traffic is horrible, but the people are nice, there is a lot to do, and it's pretty central to a lot along the coast. My new job in I.T. was great. They basically paid me to get trained! Fortunately I fit in really well and learned things quickly. I moved up the ladder very quickly and aft...Expand for more
er two years got a job at a different company. Within three years of graduating and with no past education or experience, I was already earning a six-figure income! Life was good. I was making lots of friends, dating some great people, and really just enjoying the best DC had to offer. And then, to make things even better, the company I was working for asked me to move to San Diego and head-up a whole division there. A promotion and a free move to San Diego! Perfect. What can I say about San Diego? It's perfect. The weather, the beaches, bays, parks, mountains, deserts, ... it has everything! Plus my family is an hour drive to the north. I knew I had found the place where I'd settle down. And after about a year and a half of being in San Diego I met my wife-to-be. And she has three wonderful daughters who were 2, 4 & 6 years old back then. I never thought I'd date or marry a woman with kids, but you never know about life. One year after meeting we had all moved in together. Wow, what a life changing moment that was. I went from being a bachelor to being a dad of three kids literally overnight. About six months after that I got out of the corporate world and bought a restaurant. Yep, I went from pre-med student to I.T. to restaurant owner. That was a big move and frankly I didn't realize completely what I had gotten myself into. The previous owner of the restaurant had started to run it into the ground, so I had to turn it around. And I did. In my first five years of ownership I doubled the sales and cut costs. Unfortunately those first couple of years were money-losers, so I got into a lot of debt. Now my restaurant is doing great. I'm in the process of opening a second location. My personal life didn't turn out as good. My wife and I had a rocky time. About two years ago we were on the verge of divorce when she got pregnant. We decided to keep the baby and in the backs of our minds hoped that maybe the baby would heal our relationship. In June of 2008 she was born. She is wonderful and the best thing that has happened in my life. As you'd expect, she couldn't perform the relationship saving miracle for me and her mom. So we are now in the process of getting a divorce. So now we're at the present. I have a wonderful 10 month old baby, a great business, I live in beautiful San Diego, and I'm getting divorced. Hey, 3 out of 4 isn't bad. Life is great.
