Noelyn's Story
Life
Soul / Disco 101:
A long time ago, seemingly in a galaxy far away ...
Noel's long and strange odyssey in the music business began innocuously enough in 1972 as the guest host of "Teen Scene" on an AM radio station not far from his native Vallejo, and then around the same time, those first few garage dance parties. "I was the one hovering over the record player, stacking the 45's in just the right progression of fast-fast-faster, then slow dance, to keep the party flowing properly--underneath that glowing red light bulb".
After graduating from high school in 1974, that morphed into performing at various dorms, co-ops, and frat parties, mostly at UC Berkeley -- where he was ostensibly majoring in Asian American Studies -- and also at SF State. "Instead of listening to Led Zeppelin, ELP, or Genesis, my parties were about dancing to Labelle, AWB, and Stevie Wonder!" And that annoying blank space between the records? "Eliminated ... I resorted to setting up two turntables, each with its own amplifier, so that I could cue up and play records back-to-back!"
The beat went on from there, and here are just a few of the highlights ...
1976 - Noel's first DJ residency at one of the first discos in The City, The Rickshaw Bistro
1979 - Hs' Lordships in Berkeley, talent booker and head DJ at the first upscale urban disco. This led to:
1980 - The first mix-tape to be aired on a major Bay Area radio station, KDIA
1983 - Noel joins the KDIA air-staff, and is the first mix-show DJ to host, announce, and mix live
1985 - finally, working under the name "Noel Don Juan" ... promoted to full-time, KDIA's highest rated DJ
1986 - a very busy year, starts at KDIA, continues with a TV show, "Dance Floor '86", and ends at:
KMEL, where Noel directs, mixes and produces the very first mix-shows!
1987 - Resident DJ at Club Mirage, a Bay Area classic, named "Club of the Year" in '87 and '88 by KMEL
1988 - Resident DJ at The Oasis, which under Noel's two-year tenure was dubbed: "Dance Central" by ...Expand for more
the SF Chronicle and: "The Perfect Summer Club" by the SF Examiner!
1989 - Joins the weekend air-staff of KSOL-FM, promptly becomes the highest rated DJ
1992 - Noel rejoins Page Hodel's long-running and much beloved clubs: "The Box" and "Club Q"
1995 - concurrently, a regular guest DJ stint at Audrey Joseph's legendary "Club Universe"
1996 - MECCA: A world-class first; a critically acclaimed upscale restaurant and bar featuring an architecturally integrated, state-of-the-art DJ booth! Named "The Place To See And Be Seen" for three years in a row, by the SF Bay Guardian's "Best Of The Bay" poll , in '96, '97, & '98
Noel arrived at 2029 Market in the frenetic two weeks before MECCA's grand opening in early April of 1996, and immediately hit it off with owner Gene Tartaglia. "Actually, I was the third choice," he chuckles, "Efren (Sifuentes, late of KMEL) moved to New York, and my good friend, Anita Lofton wound up giving them my pager number ... who knew?"
Music Director? At a restaurant? ** "I thought it would look really impressive on that jet-black MECCA calling card ... little did I know that the position would quickly evolve into head DJ, music and video librarian, production manager, sound engineer, part-time publicist, and talent booker! Looking back on a nearly decade-long tenure: My best moves? Without a doubt, hiring my long-time DJ buddy, Chris Wong to establish "Sunday, Bellini Sunday," bringing on board my associate DJ, Lamont Young" in 1999, and most presciently, booking what turned out to be a year-long residency for the ferociously talented, rising Neo-Soul star, Ledisi!”
2003 to the present -- and beyond: Regular guest DJ stints at The Starlight Room high atop the Sir Francis Drake Hotel overlooking Union Square, Bruno's in the Mission, Harry's Bar on Fillmore, Icon in SOMA, the Cantina on Nob Hill, Bambuddha Lounge in the TL, The Matrix in the Marina, and my regular Saturday night gig, Tabu at the Glas Kat. This week's gig? “Hit me at Noeldnjuan (at) aol!”
