Norbert's Story
i joined the army while still in high school. no offense to anyone, but i couldnt wait to get the hell out of bryan. i reported for duty on august 23, 1974 in houston. went to basic and advanced training at ft knox, kentucky. after a brief leave at home for christmas, flew to franfurt, w. germany. served as a gunner on a tank in the third armored division until discharge in july 1977. aside from the military b.s., it was a lotta fun. did a lot of travelling, the highlight of which was a month-long trip through europe from italy to england with my sister sandy and good buddy augustine lopez of dallas,tx. i regret to say that i have lost touch with my army buddies except gary ralls of lowell, mass., who i thank for seeking me out and finding me via internet. upon returning to bryan i attended blinn college at the old kraft building in downtown bryan and worked at a 7-11. i attended sam houston in huntsville the fall semester of 1978 and hated it, so tranferred to texas a&m for the spring semester, 1979. i loved it. was actively involved in alpha phi omega, a national service fraternity and the only officially recognized frat at tamu at the time. it also was co-ed. i graduated may 1982 with a b.s. in sociology and minor in accounting. i worked and played around for the summer, and started my job as an adult probation officer in dallas in august 1982. i met my wife lisa at the old longhorn ballroom on industrial in downtown dallas in march 1985. (country western dancehalls were very good to me in my courtin' days.) we were married on may 17,1986, and remain so to this day. i was accepted to attend texas tech school of law and moved to lubbock august 1987. lisa worked as a kingergarten teacher on the east side (harwell elementary). after a terrible start highlighted by a "D" in contracts i did ok, graduating in the top third of my class. i was offered jobs by a couple of law firms but decided to accept a postion as a prosecutor for the harris county da's office in houston. it is the most difficult job i hav...Expand for more
e had, but was great experience. i was literally (kinda) thrown to the wolves; you either sink or swim; fortunatly, i kept my head above water. my daughter melanie was born on september 1, 1991 down the street from the astrodome where the houston oilers were playing the oakland raiders in the season opener. my dad told me of an opening at the brazos county attorney's office in bryan in july 1992, so i applied and was hired. we settled in college station and have been here ever since. i left the county attorney office in november 1994 to work for mike oconner, an attorney in downtown bryan. i practiced primarilly criminal defense and mediation. in august 1999 i joined the office of the texas attoney general, child support division, at the bryan office, and have been there ever since. my two sons brett and mark were born in bryan on june 27, 1993 and august 25, 1995. i am also a part-time instructor at blinn college in bryan. i teach criminal justice and business law. i often teach classes in the texas prison system at the luther and pack units. i very much enjoy teaching, espeically the inmates. for a little more than a year i have been able to indulge my love of music as a volunteer programmer for keos-fm, 89.1 in bryan. i have a show named the kitchen sink on mondays from 9-11pm, and another show on the second thursday of each month called rock formations. we have 2 dogs, cricket (terrier/min pin mix) and sophie (miniature dappled dachsund). mark has a cool goldfish named nibbles. i ask myself why am i writing this, why have i joined this site? i guess to make connections again with the many people in my life that have meant a great deal to me over the years. i guess its all part of turning 50 and reflecting on one's past. if i can reconnect with just one person, it will have been well worth it. if fact, it has already happened within one day, so if i can reconnect with a second, that would be great also! if anyone actually has read this babble, drop me a line please, and let me know how youre doing!
